How awesome are my teenage dyke nieces? Since I started meeting them online in the summer of 2000, they have been a never-ending source of joy and amazement to me. I am so fiercely proud of them every time they come out to someone at school or in their family. And they keep me laughing as they talk about their music and girlfriends and explain to this middle-aged homo what it's like to be a dyke teenager. Their spirit gives me a lot of hope for the future of our queer community. Someday I'm gathering them all up and turning them loose in San Francisco during Pride Month.....
Just five feet tall and weighing only 100 pounds, Ashley is pure dyke -- and damn proud of it! When she's not playing softball, riding her motorcycle or listening to the Indigo Girls, hippiechick has managed to collect a thousand stuffed bears and almost as many queer friends. Half the girls in her school have the hots for her -- even some str8 ones! Ashley pretends she's a tough dyke but I know she's really a marshmallow (don't worry, Ash, I won't tell anyone). Ashley's the first niece I met online and she holds a special place in my heart.
Ah Katie.... I've watched her grow from an insecure closet case to an ass-kicking proud and out butch DYKE!! Cowgirl is one of my favorities because she loves Billie Holliday and laughs at all my jokes...but that's not the only reason. She's handled some real adversity with courage and hasn't backed down from her true queer identity. I call her Molly because she reminds me of Molly Bolt, the hero of Rubyfruit Jungle - gutsy, funny and a future film maker. She wants to sign Angelina Jolie to star in her first movie (pant pant). I can't wait to meet Katie! Love you Molly!
