**The
following story is true.
To say we are a unique family would
be a gross understatement. We are a
blended family not only physically,
but spiritually too. Some of us are
Baptist and some of us are Catholic.
It was never a big deal to us. We love
and serve the same Jesus and that
has always been our common bond.
Bill and I have known each other
since childhood. In the spring of 1989, we met
(again), dated for awhile and married
in December of that same year. Bill
had three children from his first
marriage, and I had four children from
mine. We never then or now think
of these wonderful kids as our “step”
children. In fact, I think what
has made this work so well is that we love
them all equally. We were a large
family. All of the kids live with us. It took
some getting use to, but it has
always been a labor of love. In May of 1993
Bill had the opportunity to legally
adopted my four kids. He had been their
father for four years so to them
it was just a technicality, but to Bill and I it
was a major milestone. After seeing
how easy it was to adopt, Bill and I
decided to adopt yet another child.
We went to an attorney and we were put
on a waiting list. We had already
decided to only adopt “handicapped or
hard to place” infants. On July
16, 1993 our lives changed for ever. We
received a phone call that a baby
girl had been born. She had many
handicaps, she had no one to love
her. Would we be interested in seeing
her. I can’t even describe to you
what happened when we saw her for the
first time. She looked bad, real
bad, but to Bill and I she was the most
beautiful baby we had ever seen.
Through a nurse, we learned what had
happened to her. She had been aborted
at 36 weeks gestation and had
survived. We took her home, and
asked God to help us do the very best we
could with what time we had with
her. You see, she was only suppose to
live 8 weeks. She had been injected
in the front and back of her head with a
toxin. It had left her blind, and
very brain damaged. We named her Sarah
Elizabeth and legally adopted her
in August. The story doesn’t end there.
She will be three years old July
15th. OUR GOD IS A MIGHTY GOD. During
those three years we have had many
struggles. Sarah is very handicapped.
The abortion damaged 75% of her
brain. Bill and I decided that in the
summer of 1995 it was time to take
her story public. We have always been
very pro-life, but now more than
ever. We were introduced to a small grass
roots pro-life group called “Spiritual
Resistance”. We instantly felt drawn to
the coordinator of this blessed
group and he became a much loved
member of our family. Not everyone
appreciated our going public with
Sarah’s story. One week after we
went public, a man came to our home on
Sunday morning while Bill was at
Church and beat me severely. He broke
my nose, cracked two ribs, broke
part of my right cheek, and bruised my
spleen. He told me that if we didn’t
stop talking about her in public that
next time he would kill Sarah and
myself. We knew the risk involved, but we
also knew we couldn’t serve two
masters and our Master was Jesus Christ
and at all cost we had to tell
people the holocaust that was occurring in
our city. In August, after extensive
surgery to repair my face, I was
attacked again. Different men,
but the same message. This time I fought
back!! I threw a few punches myself.
Now you have to understand, I am 5’3
and weigh about 125 pounds, but
this time they were trying to kidnap
Sarah. Something snapped inside
of me and I know I would have stopped
at nothing to save my child. Since
then, I have healed physically and
emotionally. I have leaned on my
Catholic Faith. One thing I have learned in
this journey, there are good Christians
(of all faiths) out there that want to
see and end to abortion. It brings
tears to my eyes when I think of men
standing in my front yard around
the clock to protect us. You see God
never promised that our walk with
him would be easy. Sometimes the
Cross gets heavy, real heavy, but
Bill and I love the Lord and want to serve
him. We thank Him daily for sparing
Sarah’s life from the beginning and
again this past summer. We thank
Him for all the wonderful Christians we
have met along the way. We thank
Him for Spiritual Resistance and what
they have meant to us, but mostly
we thank Him for His son Jesus.
Without Him , we all would surely
be lost. This is an ongoing story. We will
keep you informed. God Bless all
of you!
