| Around the spring of 2002, God began growing the idea of a worship band in my heart. A contemporary service, River of Life, was already in place at Zion UMC and was barely struggling along. I told my idea to Jared and Carrie and soon the idea began to grow in us. Jared had only been playing the guitar for a few months, but he prayed about the opportunity. We joined up with Deanne, Matt, and Ben who were all very new to their instruments. By the end of the summer, after a lot of thought and prayer, we decided that God was really calling us to put a group together whose sole purpose would be to give praise unto His name. We began practicing together and the pieces fell into place very quickly. Before we knew it, we were playing for our first River of Life service in October. Since then we've held River of Life services once a month, played for 2 youth Sundays at my church and one at Ben's, played for a youth night on New Years Eve, and a retreat for Deanne's youth group. God's hand of blessing has certainly been on us!!! Throughout all of this, it is our prayer that God would take our humble offering of praise and use it to touch lives. That is our reason for playing our instruments and lifting our voices. The name Damascus Road was suggested to us by a member of the congregation at Zion UMC, and the name seemed to fit perfectly. It was while on the road to Damascus that Saul, a persecuted of Christians, encountered the Lord Jesus Christ and decided to follow Him. He became a whole new person, changing his name to Paul and going on to bring the gospel to the Gentiles. The name Damascus Road has a two-fold meaning for us. First, all of us have had a personal encounter with Jesus Christ that has changed our lives forever. Although we come from different schools, denominational backgrounds, and life experiences; there is that one thing that bonds us together. Secondly, it is our prayer and passionate desire to allow people to experience Christ through our music, for people to encounter Him at our services, and for their lives to be changed in some way through His power and love. That is our prayer and our mission as a band and as individuals. |
