| SuperBowl VI Cowboys vs Dolphins January 16, 1972 The Dallas Cowboys rushed for a record 252 yards, while limiting the Miami Dolphins to 185. Dallas also recorded a first, by not allowing a Super Bowl opponent to score a touchdown. Dallas led 3-0, when Chuck Howley recovered Larry Csonka's fumble in the second quarter. It was Csonka's first fumble of the season. After the fumble, Dallas scored a touchdown, and took a 10-3 halftime lead. Dallas received the second half kick-off, and marched 71 yards for a TD and a 17-3 lead. In the fourth quarter, Bob Griese was intercepted by Howley, and returned it to Miami's 9 yard line. Three plays later, Mike Ditka too a 7 yard pass from Staubach into the endzone for the final touchdown. Their offense scored two TD's off of excellent field position. Miami opened its first scoring drive on the Dolphins� 37-yard line. Bob Griese�s 28-yard touchdown pass to Howard Twilley followed an 18-yard pass from Bob Griese to Paul Warfield, and the Dolphins opened a 7-0 lead. On the next drive, Washington moved the football from its own 17 to the Miami 48 with 2 minutes remaining in the first half. Then, the Miami Dolphins linebacker, Nick Buoniconti, intercepted a Billy Kilmer pass at the Miami 41 and returned it back to the Washington 27. On this drive, with several efficient runs, and a Bob Griese pass to Jim Mandich, the Dolphins moved the football to the 1-yard line. With only 18 seconds left in the half, Kiick scored from the 1, and the Dolphins had a 14-0 lead at halftime. Washington�s only touchdown came with 2:07 left in the game. The play resulted from a misplayed field-goal attempt and fumble by Garo Yepremian. The Redskins� Mike Bass pulled the ball out of the air and ran 49 yards for the score. This play prevented the 17-0 Dolphins from wrapping up the Super Bowl victory 17-0. Dolphins safety Jake Scott, who had 2 interceptions, was voted the game�s MVP. Washington Redskins 0 0 0 7 7 Miami Dolphins 7 7 0 0 14 SuperBowl VIII Dolphins vs Vikings January 13, 1974 The defending Super Bowl Champion Miami Dolphins scored on their first two posessions, while driving 62 and 56 yards. Miami's defense limited the Vikings to just seven plays in the first quarter. On their first drive, Miami's Larry Csonka scored with 9:33 to go in the first quarter. Miami then scored on a drive ending with a one yard touchdown score by Jim Kiick, with 1:22 remaining, giving them a 14-0 lead. A 28 yard field goal by Garo Yepremian gave Miami their 17-0 halftime lead. The Dolphins scored another TD in the third quarter, when Nick Buoniconti caused Oscar Reid to fumble. Jake Scott recovered, and Miami eventually scored. Larry Csonka was name the game's MVP. Minnesota Vikings 0 0 0 7 7 Miami Dolphins 14 3 7 0 24 SuperBowl XVII Redskins vs Dolphins January 30, 1983 Washington Redskins John Riggins ran for a Super Bowl record 166 yards, to lead the Washing Redskins to a 27-17 victory over the Miami Dolphins. The Redskins offense rolled up 400 yards of offense on this day, second most in Super Bowl history, at that time. The Dolphins ruled during the first half of the game. A David Woodley TD pass in the first quarter, a Uwe von Schamann FG in the second, and a then Super Bowl record 98 yard kick-off return by Fulton Walker gave them the lead. After a third quarter FG, Washington took it's first lead of the game with 10:11 to go, when John Riggins scored on a 43 yard play on fourth and one. Another score, a pass to wide receiver Charlie Brown from Joe Theismann completed the scoring for the game. The Dolphins lost the game in the second half, when they could gain only 41 yards in total offense. John Riggins was named the game's MVP. Washington Redskins 0 10 3 14 27 Miami Dolphins 7 10 0 0 17 SuperBowl XIX 49'ers vs Dolphins January 20, 1985 This game was highly regarded to be one of the greatest Super Bowls in history. Joe Montana vs Dan Marino. Miami's offense vs San Francisco's Defense. San Francisco's offense, vs Miami's defense. Miami had the #1 scoring offense, with San Francisco holding the #2 spot. San Francisco allowed the fewest points during the season, while Miami held their opponents to the second fewest total. In the game, the San Francisco 49'ers outgunned the Miami Dolphins, to win their second Super Bowl Championship. The Dolphins led 10-7 at the end of the first period. However, the second period was a different story. San Francisco scored three TD's and took a 28-16 halftime lead. Ten more points in the third quarter was enough to put the game far out of reach, even with Dan Marino in the pocket. Roger Craig recorded a Super Bowl record by scoring on pass receptions from Joe Montana of 8, 17, and 3 yards. Montana became only the third two-time MVP, joining Bart Starr and Terry Bradshaw. Overall, Montana completed 24-35 passes for a record 331 yards, 3 TD's, and also rushed for a TD.
