This section is on equine parasites. These are all questions that have been submitted or that I have been inspired to talk about because of a question submitted. If you have any topics that you would like to have discussed please feel free to email me with the topic or question.

Do horses and cows get worms like cats and dogs do?

Horses and cows do indeed get intestinal worms. A variety of worms infect the digestive tract of horses and cows including species of roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, and tapeworms similar to what infects dogs and cats. Horses and cows do not, however, get heartworms like dogs and even cats do. In horses, some of the species of infecting worms migrate through the intestinal tract causing damage that predisposes the horses to colic. Cows get worms in the four compartments of their stomachs as well as the intestinal tract. Massive worm infestations can kill a cow or horse and even mild infestations can significantly affect the animal's productivity. Thus, intensive deworming schedules have been developed in order to minimize the damage that is done. There are a variety of dewormers available for use. Rotation of the dewormers is recommended to help reduce the development of resistance.

I have researched and answered these questions to the best of my ability. But I am human and make mistakes. If there is any part of my answer that you feel is incorrect, please let me know. The last thing I want is to disseminate false or incorrect information.
