Phantom in London

Biography:

Born in the Swansea area, Mike studied singing with the celebrated Welsh operatic tenor Allun Davies and drama with the late David Kelsey. Mike first came to national prominence at 17 on Central Television's talent show New Faces. His success on this led to an engagement on Summertime Special and Mike was then chosen to appear before HRH Prince of Wales in A Royal Gala which was televised nationwide. This was followed in 1990 by a world tour aboard the SS Canberra, performing as a leading member of the Stadium Theatre Company. The year concluded with an appearance in A Night of 100 Stars - a tribute to David Bell, at the London Palladium, for London Weekend Television.

In 1991, making his West End debut, Mike joined the cast of Les Miserables at the Palace Theatre, London, playing the part of Feuilly and understudying Enjolras, a role he played some 60 times during his time there. In 1992 he was offered the romantic lead of Marius in the brand new production of Les Miserables in Manchester at the Palace Theatre - a part he played to great acclaim for 14 months.

In October 1993 Mike opened as Raoul in The Phantom of the Opera at the Manchester Opera House. From January 1995 he appeared at some performances in the title role of the Phantom, receiving outstanding reviews. The Manchester production concluded on 1st July 1995, having been seen by over 1.2 million people, smashing all box office records for the City and overtaking Les Miserables as the most successful production in regional theatre.

Mike is aslos an active song writer and spent the following two years concentrating on this and major concert commitments. His television special, recorded for Border Television and entitled Music Forum, was broadcast April 1995 and became an instant hit. Mike was invited by Cameron Mackintosh to perform in his prestigious 10th Anniversary Concert, celebrating the success of Les Miserables, at the Royal Albert Hall on Sundat 9th October 1995. The concert was recorded for international broadcast on both radio and television and was screened in the UK twice by SKY TV and BBC2 and is available on video. Mike was also invited to lead a large Finale in honour of the Prince of Wales for A Royal Gala, celebrating ten years of the Prince's Business Trust. This event was also held at the Royal Albert Hall and was subsequently broadcast on the ITV network. Mike was featured at the Euro '96 Football Final at Wembley Stadium on Sunday 30th June 1996 when he performed material from Les Miserables alongside members of the European cast. This presentation was seen by millions of viewers world-wide.

Mike opened in The Phantom of the Opera at Her Majesty's, London, on 21st April 1997, in the leading romantic role of Raoul. An outstanding performance which should not be missed.
