About the Raouls in the novels:

"It is possible that his feelings for her deepened by the end of the story."

"Susan Kay makes Raoul so likeable. She really did his character a favor."

"I would rather be loved by some-one young and handsome and who made me feel good than some-one who spat it big time when he didn't get his own way."

"In Susan Kay's novel, by the end, Raoul deserves admiration at the very best, and sypmpathy at the very least. He truly loves her; that much is obvious. Even if he wasn't as intense a man as Erik, his entire heart belonged to Christine. Even when he knew what she had done with Erik, he still took her back, and though he always suspected she loved Erik more than she had ever loved him, he is still faithful to her, even in memory. Many say that Raoul stole Erik's true love, but in Kay's novel Erik steals Raoul'l too when she realizes that she loves Erik."

"Everyone automatically dislikes Raoul because he is Erik's rival, and Erik is the protagonist, but if you try to see the story from Raoul's point of view, you really end up feeling sorry for him. He actually is a nice, compassionate guy and truly in love with Christine, but every time he turns around, she's disappeared, and there isn't much he can do about it. And even though he does come across as annoying sometimes, you can tell that he cares about her."

"I love Raoul. I think that he loves Christine with all his heart. In the novel it is shown that he had always loved her and was saddened that they couldn't be together due to his title. He really did fight for her, but he didn't know what he was up against. If Christine was just a trophy wife to him, would he really risk all that? Would he follow her to Perros? Would he go through the torture chamber? Trophy wives are a dime in a dozen, and beside, Philippe was going to let them marry anyway. Also, people need to remember that it was Christine that made the choice. If she wanted Erik she would have stayed with him, but she really did love Raoul. Also, I hate Kay's ending. Leroux never intendied in having Erik and Christine consomate their relationship. For her it was a father-daughter, teacher-student love relationship. Kay's ending was completely out of character."

About the Stage Raouls:

"I have always seen magnificent actors in the role of Raoul. One should keep in mind that very often it is more difficult to play the bad guy than it is to play the good guy. I think that even though the character of Raoul may not be the most positive, people often associate this with the actors who portray the role. They deserve much more credit. To play such a role is both physically and mentally demanding. They do their best...congratulations!"

"Almost everything he does in the play is for Christine."

"We have seen many different guys play Raoul in the ALW production, including Lawrence Anderson. He has a fabulous voice and extreme talent . After the 10th time watching him perform in LA we concluded he is the perfect man for the part. It is so true that most people go home hating the character, but there is no reason. After all he is just a man deeply in love with Christine."
