The following applet also shows each of the four types of links that are automatically drawn in. Because the map is somewhat busy, the links are faded significantly in an effort to make the map less crowded. Each color refers to one of the four generations of jump drive needed to make the jump -- and the number refers to the light-years distance between the systems. The bright green is suitable for generation one jump drives, the darker green requires generation two jump drives, the dark amber requires generation three jump drives and the dark red requires generation four jump drives. As you can see, the number of systems that can be reached with primitive jump drives is very small. Generation four jump drives, on the other hand, are also relatively rare, while generation three warp drives are the standard for much of the Federation, and almost every system can be reached -- even if in a roundabout way -- by generation three jump drives. The final key for labelling is not given in an applet. Labeling of stars is based on the population of the system. Stars that are unlabelled have a population of less than 10,000 individuals. The name of the system can still be reached by clicking on the star, and details of the system can still be reached at the link. Worlds that have between 10,000 and 1 million individuals are spelled out normally. High population worlds -- for the sake of this map, worlds with a population of over 1 million -- are given in ALL CAPS. The map above is for the Karingrane Subsector (relabeling as Zarun Subsector pending) of the Sagittarius Bridge Sector. It is located in a thick "streamer" of the Orion Arm that passes through the gap between the Orion and Sagittarius Arms of the galaxy, hence the name Sagittarius Bridge. The Northern edge of the sector is claimed and settled by the Federation, although the Shanariu Khanate pushes up against the western border. In the south are a few small independent states (including the Vuruaq Corporation, included in this subsector), and then the large Ksaadu Empire. The Federation has only settled the subsector within the last few hundred years. This, combined with the potentially hostile states on the borders, make the Sagittarius Bridge a frontier zone, with fewer established starports, and small, growing populations on most worlds in the area. There is also a heavier degree of military activity in the area than would be expected in most sectors of the Federation. To both the east and west of the sector is the gap between the Sagittarius and Orion Arms of the galaxy. Of course, this "gap" really isn't a true gap, as there are plenty of stars in it, but the density is less, and the stars are mostly unsettled and unexplored red and brown dwarfs -- many of which don't even have planets around them, or if they do, they are epistellar "hot jovians." This causes a lack of places to refuel -- even through unrefined gas giant skimming -- and means that the gap makes a fairly effective barrier to settlement and travel. (However, during the last Ksaado-Federation War, Jishija Vaech, a Federation Admiral of Altairan descent, successfully pulled off a Hannibal maneuver by crossing the gap to attack the Ksaadu Empire in the flank. Although he had to abandon and scrap a number of ships in his fleet, he arrived with enough of a force to bring the Ksaadu fleet away from the front line, which enabled the Federation to broker a peace treaty.) Each of the individual systems above has (or will have) a web page describing it in more detail. Follow the directions given above to follow the link to the webpage. |
