ISSUE #96   USUA CLUB #66, Richard E. Miller Chapter  NEWSLETTER

June-02

Back To Archives

This month's meeting will be held at Ray Osterhaut's NEW hangar in Windsor on Saturday, June 15th.

The food will be ready by noon and the meeting will start at 1PM. Anyone needing directions to Ray's

place should call Paul Nulton at 570-879-4627.

I missed last month's meeting and the newsletter as well.  Things got busy around my house and

everyone has my sincerest apologies.

Tom Decker has planned a Friday night campout for the night before the meeting.  The events of the

last two years were well enjoyed by all who went.  Please consider coming out on Friday.  Even if you

can't stay the night come out and participate in the campfire conversations.  It should be a good time.

New member, Roger Thoms, shows a definite interest in ultralights.  He is the proud new owner of

a Flightstar.  He has had several hours of instruction in a 150 at Sidney airport.  I know we have

a couple members looking for a two-place ride for him in the near future.  The man shows a lot of

enthusiasm and isn't fooling around. Throttled by concerns for safety offered him by several members

of the club, he's doing it right and going by the book.  He will be a good addition to the club.  As soon

as I can get  a replacement prop blade from Ivo-prop, He'll be buzzing around.

There is a BRS 750 VLS ballistic chute for sale.  It was bought new in 2000 and was on my

Flightstar.  Original price was 2250, asking price is 1700.  Please contact Jerry Frappier at

639-2264.  This chute will work for most two-place planes as well and comes with full documents.

The weather has been strange all year and even stranger the last couple weeks.  The rain comes

down and the wind blows, then it's calm (or is it?).  I've driven by the Sidney airport four or five times

this week driving my daughter to school and thinking, Maybe I'll go flying.  The clouds are high enough

for minimums, but they "smell" funny.  An hour later, back at home, we have a thunderstorm and a

cloudburst that would drown a fish!  We were on the next door neighbor's front lawn watching

thunderstorms go around us Thursday night when my wife said "$$%%@#*^&^$, I hear a twister!"

That was at 8PM.  At 8PM, a tornado took out a barn, roof and several trees just west of Bainbridge.

We live 2 miles from the spot where it came down.  I guess this month's safety tip is to be very careful

of the weather and to listen to your "nose" as well as your ears when you're not sure.

This is the month when we have election of officers.  Please attend and, if at all possible, please run

for one of the offices.  A year or two is great for the ego, etc., but then it gets old and you tend to wear

out.  Being an active part of the club will get your ideas and goals out there and make the club a better

organization because of it.

There was discusion at the last meeting concerning the "cookout" we have every month.  I guess the

original fare was doughnuts and coffee and it got expanded to smorgesbord.  This is the election

\month.  It's the decision and business month.  What does the club really want for the monthly feeding

frenzy?  Doughnuts and coffee, beer and pizza or hot dogs and coke or "veggies".

Guy's father has a piece of land 6 miles south of Kirkwood which he would be willing to mow into a

double runway airport for our use.  THIS IS PRELIMINARY!  Paul is getting GPS coordinates and Ray

says it looks like a good place.  The woodchucks haven't dug holes and the place is fairly flat.  We'll

keep you posted.

I don't have a lot of details but I hear Ralph Arnold is not doing well.  Any body with more information

should let me know for publication to the club.  If anyone hears of any developments with Ralph, Please

contact Paul Nulton or Jerry Frappier and we'll get the word spread around.  Best wishes to Ralph from

his friends, God bless.
