The
next meeting of USUA Club #66 will be held at 1pm, Saturday, July 19th at Ray
Osterhout’s Camel Back hanger.
.
June Meeting Notes
Fifteen members
attended the meeting held at Ray Osterhout's Camel Back Airport.
Tom
Hettig said that he would volunteer to hold the club supplies at his place.
There was discussion that it may be a good idea to have a meeting every other
week during the summer to take advantage of the good weather.
There was more discussion
about a trip to Old Rhinebeck but no date was set.
It was mentioned that the sports pilot license will require a physical.
For those who haven’t paid
their dues yet, please contact Dave Schwartz.
Respectfully submitted,

As I read the meeting notes I
was a bit surprised at the mention of sports pilot license requiring a
physical. While it may turn out to be true, I did a bit of research by
going to the USUA and EAA websites to see what was new with the Sport Pilot
proposals and found nothing about physicals being required.
What I did find was that the EAA had petitioned the FAA to have a drivers license substitute for a medical for Private Pilots and that petition had been turned down by the FAA. This has led to much confusion because a lot of people assumed that it meant the FAA would require a medical for the proposed Sport Pilot license. The FAA denies this assumption.
Anyway, I would not be surprised by anything the FAA finally decides regarding the Sport Pilot license. I submitted my comments to USUA which basically said that it would have been a simple matter of using a drivers license instead of a medical, and raise the limits of weight, fuel and speed to become a sport pilot. We'll see! I just hope the final decision does not effect the Ultralight Community in a negative way.
