The next
meeting of USUA Club #66 will be held on Saturday, February 15th at Tom
Hettig’s place.
The January 2003
Meeting was held at Tom Hettig's
Twenty members
and one guest, Gary Harris, attended.
Gary owns a trike, and resides near Greene, NY.
George Smith is
finalizing a pocket size Club# 66 Airport Directory for Club members use,
and will provide additional copies for
our members. We may also want to put
this information on our web site.
Liability forms are being processed.
Anybody with a field needs to talk to Ray Osterhout regarding these
forms.
Ray Osterhout is
finalizing plans for the March Dinner meeting. We will need to get the list of
people attending the meeting started at the February meeting. The club voted to have Prime rib, and
Chicken cordon-bleu. The Club members asked Al Osterhout to contact Dr.
Tony Romanazzi (USUA Reg. 1 Rep) and give him our club concerns for the USUA Annual
meeting in February, and invite him to come to the March dinner meeting to be
our guest speaker. The club will pay for his dinner. Tony accepted our
invitation on 1/29/03, and asked if there was a club member in, or near the
Windsor Ny. area, that could put him up for the night. The club voted to
provide a couple musician friends of Bob Lindsey's with a free dinner, if they
would come to the dinner meeting and play (Blue-Grass) with Bob for some
entertainment. Bob will check into this, and let us know at
the February meeting.
Tom Hettig suggested that we have more fly-ins.
Gil Aitchison
volunteered to cook again for the February meeting at Tom Hettig's place.
We will need a cook
for the April meeting, if we have a meeting in April.
Duane
Ross, brought up the issue of the club paying $40.00 to someone hosting a club
meeting, He said if it continues that he and some other members are going to
leave the club. Since this issue was voted on and accepted prior to
Al Osterhout's being the club president, Al would like the clubs board of
directors to handle this matter, and decide, if it needs to be brought back up
for another vote by the club members, and when it should be voted on
again. It was voted on and accepted at the November 2002 meeting
when Paul Nulton was President.
Tom Hettig would
still like some help clearing trees from his airfield. His work-bee is still scheduled for the last
two Sundays in February. (Bring your saws, and get the sawdust
flying).
Be sure to get your
club dues paid. Members who are not paid-up by the March meeting are usually
removed from our member roster.

Last month I mentioned an incident involving severe control surface movements, G Loads, and stress. The question was, what happens to maneuvering speed when the gross weight of a plane goes down? Does the maneuvering speed increase or decrease?
The answer is “maneuvering speed works contrary to
intuition—as the gross weight of the aircraft goes down, so does the maneuvering
speed.” This is a quote from AOPA
Pilot, Jan 2003 magazine.
Maneuvering speed (Va) for aircraft is usually 1.7 times the normal stall speed
unless specified otherwise in your POH.
Don’t know if this applies to Ultralights or not.
