This page is dedicated to
the memory of my Dad.
Robert J. Lootens, Sr.
1938 - 1998

Dad was an Optician and spent his entire adult life helping others see.
When he died I knew it would be very important to him to have his eyes donated to someone who could not see. So that is what we did. I know Dad is very proud and happy to once again be helping someone to see.

My Dad was also an ace mechanic. He loved building classic cars from the ground up and was very good at it. He won several awards for his wonderful workmanship on a '48 Kaiser. He traveled across the midwest showing his car with great pride.

Dad had a great sense of humor. He could make me laugh even in worst mood, he also had a smile that would melt your heart. Dad was the example of discipline that I follow for my own children. I always knew that Dad was the boss, but that he also loved me very much.

I miss Dad very much, he is always in my thoughts and I know that someday I will once again be with him. My son Keaton was very close to my dad. On the first anniversary of a summer outing that we always took with my dad, my husband Randy and Keaton (4) were grocery shopping and Keaton asked Randy if he could buy a "get well" balloon. Randy feeling somewhat perplexed by Keatons request ask him why he wanted to buy the balloon. Keaton said that he wanted to send it to Grandpa Lootens. Randy bought the balloon, brought it back home and we went to the back yard and sent the balloon to heaven to make Grandpa Lootens "feel better."

I shared this story with a few friends and a day or so later I received the poem below. I had no idea who had written it, but it was very special. I enventurally found the author and thanked her. Below is the poem she wrote for us.

"Grandpa Lootens Balloon"

At our favorite grocery store
are balloons for special events.
All are bright and cheerful
with messages or comments.

As Keaton stared at the balloons,
one of them caught his eye.
This one could be for Granpa Lootens,
whose home now is on High.

Randy bought it for our son,
seeing the intent look on Keatons' face.
Knowing that the "Get Well Soon"
would a tear replace.

God blessed us with a beautiful day,
the balloon flew out of sight.
No tree limbs or anything
would prevent this balloon's flight.

Angels guided it into God's hands,
Grandpa Lootens stood astound,
Whom in heaven has received
a gift so wonderful and profound?

This poem is very special to us as it reminds me of just how much my Dad meant to all of us; and how much he is missed.

I love you Daddy, and I miss you terribly! Watch over me and guide me as you always did when we were together. Until we are together again...
