Revolutionary War Patriot, Lucas Powell, (1722-1811), was a member of the Amherst county Committee of Safety, 1775, and 1776 was selected to examine the recruited soldiers. He was born near Williamsburg, Va., and died in Amherst, Va. Also No. 11865.

His son, Nathaniel Powell, (1762-1827), enlisted when a lad in Capt. John Cropper's company, Ninth Virginia regiment and served until the surrender of Cornwallis. He was born in Williamsburg, Va., and died near Lebanon, Tenn.
