St. George's College also affectionately known as Manor House was started in 1853 through the efforts of Rev. McTye. It was opened in a cottage known as Manor House - the name by which the campus is still known. It was founded by the Archbishop of Patna with the object of educating Roman Catholics. Later it was taken over by the Capuchin Fathers who handed it over to the Patrician Brothers of Ireland in March 1894.
The Patrician Brothers at St. George's celebrated their Centenary at Manor House last year. The Patrician founder was Bishop Daniel Delany. Born near Mountrath, Co. Leix, Ireland 1747. His primary education was at the local Hedge School and attended college and ecclesiastical education in St. Omer, France. Was ordained to Priesthood in 1770 and returned to Ireland. Ministered as a curate in Tullow, Co. Carlow. (Diocese of Kildare and Leighlin). Ordained Bishop, August 31, 1783. Founded the congregation, February 2, 1808. Left for his heavenly abode July 9, 1814. Remains interred at the parish Church, Tullow, Co. Carlow. Last words to Brothers, "Love God and live together in peace and charity."
NOTE: Hedge School: The only type of education evailable to Catholic children in Ireland in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. These schools derive their name from the Irish hedge, as classes were held out of doors and only when a master was available.
Location of SGC and Other schools in and around Mussoorie
St. George's College is located in Barlowganj, a small community in Mussoorie. Mussoorie is a hill station in India in the state of Uttar Pradesh (U.P.) located in the Sivaliks or the foothills of the Himalayas.
Oak Grove School (OG) -- This school is co-ed & supposedly owned and run by the Indian Railways. I am not sure, but I think when it first started all graduates were employed by the railways (employment right after school?? Hmm..strange concept to believe). This school is situated in "Jharipani" in even a smaller community than Barlowganj just a couple of kms down from it. Famous for crew cuts and strange dudes. Don't think we had a tiff with these fellas...altho it would piss us off big time when we had to travel on the top of the bus coz them dudes would pre-occupy the seats in the bus right from Jharipani...*Pout*
Woodstock-- This is probably the most modern school in Mussoorie. Situated in the most beautiful surroundings was the target of envy of all who either couldn't afford it or had the complex in attending it. Probably had the largest number of international students. Was pretty much thought to be outta our league coz they had this hype of being THE "Sophisticated" school. They had those automatic taps way back in oh gee...early 1980's or something. They did have some sizzling women there tho. Esp. one that I remember distinctly.....Arrrrrr!!
Wynberg Allen (WAS)-- This school is situated half way between the town of Mussoorie and SGC. Can't think of a lot to say about it except that they've been our bitterest rivals ever since these two schools came into existance. Funny thing about WAS tho....I still haven't found out if it was a good school or not. We were just too consumed in hatred I guess...and Man...It does sound silly now. The standard of education here was I guess pretty much the same as SGC and I'm sure they had some nice people in there but arrrggghhh being a true manorite...yu gotta understand...it's hard for me to be objective about them...or any other school for that matter.
Hampton Court (Hampty) -- Hampty is situated right in the heart of the town and was my Junior school from 1979-84. This is a primary school and is hence only uptil grade 5th. I have the happiest memories from this school and I still have the badge of Leader I from the time when I was the studies leader of the Radhakrishnan (Yellow) house. I love every thing about this school...all the manners I have remaining are probably coz of this school....it was all downhill (in the manners dept.) in SGC. However SGC is still the school that made me the Man I am (and I don't wanna see smirks appearing in the room on that comment either).
Convent of Jesus & Mary, Waverly Convent (Waves) -- Our sister, only-for-girls, school. Famous for being the oldest school in Mussoorie. Probably every Manorite respects them for being our sis school ever since the dawn of time. I guess part of the attraction for this school for us was - we couldn't have 'em. Waverly is a convent school and we were a full on Catholic school, an unauthorized contact between the students of the two schools was a good reason for expulsion and in our case it wasn't without some serious "benders". My best memories are from when Waverly would come over for our school fete...never saw SGC come alive like that. To be honest that was the only reason to go to the fete :). Yeah I know, sounds a bit corny, but you try and live within the confines of a school on top of a mountain separated from the rest of the civilization by a valley :). Too bad it is only upto the 10th grade.
Mussoorie International School (MIS) -- The other only-for-girls school situated enroute to the Kempty falls. This I think, is the newest school in Mussoorie. It is also famous for being the most expensive school in India. Wouldn't be surprised if they match or even beat Woodstock (and now SGC after the change that SGC has gone through over the last few years) in facilities/ammenities. MIS is home to a large population of Indian students who were born and are living in the African continent. Best remebered in SGC for having the balls to initiate socials with us. Have to say, it was one of THE most important/memorable events of my entire school life in SGC. Not to mention the great friends I made, in the process. For the longest time I was under the impression that we were the only batch of Manorites to ever have socials in the history of Manor House, with MIS or any other girl-school for that matter. Was proud as hell about it too :). The next batch acted so keen about them having one, that the school authorities unanimously decided to not make it a tradition, in a fear that something might happen (that's open to interpretation). Probably for good reason too, seeing the state of boys and girls of our batch after the socials :). I think just about everyone in both the schools was in love with someone, whether they danced with that guy/girl or if it was their friend who did. Anyhow, I have recently learned that we weren't the last batch who had socials with MIS. A couple of batches down from us did have socials with MIS again, but apparently they blew it big time and now all the subsequent batches in SGC will be left devoid of that amazing experience, unless of course the prinicpals of both schools go get drunk and decide, Ahhh what the hell, let the kids party :). I have some amazing memories and anecdotes from those times but for that, you'll have to contact me :).
Mussoorie Public School (MPS) -- Situated right in the centre of the town was also just another public school. I don't really know much about this school to say anything good or bad about them. Must have been there maybe 2-3 times in my entire life. Oh yeah what's the deal with the brown sports clothes???
Mussoorie Modern School (MMS) -- Geez...what can I say ?. If you have been rejected by every other school in Mussoorie, this is who'll take ya. Famous for being the first to pick up and initiate fights for the most trivial reasons (such as if they lose a match)...I reckon Waves were pretty damn brave to be so dangerously close to these fellas. I really wish I had something good to say about this school...I've sat here for 10 whole mins trying to think of something nice about them but argggghhh!! there just isn't. If there's anyone from MMS reading this...I'm sorry...I'm sure you're a good person and all that but the impression that the people from your school had given us from all of their activities over the so many years....just isn't commendable at all and hard to ignore. The only thing I can really think of is...they were a good competition (not necessarily a good sport) in soccer and they are the only ones who've beaten us in the Jackie cup a couple of times. I think they were also banned from the tournament for a year or two for they trademark uncivilised behaviour. As for the latest on MMS, I should take back anything good I might have inadvertently said about MMS before. Ever since I found out that we don't have the Inter-school Sports better known as the Olympics anymore. SGC and a few other schools refused to participate in it, if MMS was allowed to participate (because of some unruly MMS behaviour). One thing led to another and the Olympics were stopped altogether. All I can say is even MMS alumni should hate their school for this, if nothing else.
Tibetan Home School (THS) -- This school was established by and for the Tibetan community settled in Mussoorie. It is located in a far away location of Happy Valley. This was primarily for Tibetans who couldn't afford or didn't want to study in any other school in Mussoorie and for intellectually challenged non-Tibetans since I don't think they had a strict selection criteria. They were pretty good in soccer I remember and probably the best in "Thapli". To be honest though...I don't really have any ill-feelings for them.
Guru Nanak 5th Centenary School (GNFC) -- This school is named after the 1st Guru in Sikh History. Previously known as the Vincent Hill School. If you want your child to know about one of the most powerful religions in the world - Sikhism, then this school is for you. The school is a home to kids from all over the world incl. U.S., Canada, Thailand etc. primarily from families who are either Sikhs or have adopted Sikhism & wanted their children to know more about it as well as about the language Punjabi. This school having I.C.S.E. board, is also one of the top ones as far as studies are concerned.
