Jacko ran off, and Uncle Vonjo went on into Town. Next day, Naomi and her brothers took all the oranges to the market at Vai-town. Soon Naomi had plenty-plenty of money. She counted her five-cents, five cents. She had forty and more too!! Naomi ran to the big store. Would the pink kwee dress still be there? It was! Naomi bought that pink dress for baby sister. She bought a head tie for Mamma, and a head tie for herself. She got little sweets for all her brothers. It was good to have brothers, too sometimes, that is.
Naomi put the little kwee dress on baby sister. "What a fine-fine dress! said Mamma. "What a fine-fine baby sister," said Naomi.
Naomis County, Liberia is the oldest republic in Africa. It was founded in 1822 when slaves in the United States came to build a county of their own in Africa. The name of Liberia was chosen because it is the same word as Liberty, and the capital was called Monrovia in honor of the American President James Monroe. Liberia's independence dates from 1847, and Independence Day is celebrated on July 26. Liberia has more than a million people during the time of this story. Most of them belong to one or another of nearly thirty tribes, and most earn a living by working on the land or in the forest. The important crop is rubber, but rice, bananas, cocoa, palm oil, and kola nuts are valuable too. Diamonds are minded, and so is iron ore, which is of high quality. It is so hot and wet in Liberia that clothing is not needed for warmth. A girl or woman may wear a skirt called a lapa, made of two yards of material. A string of tiny black beads are supposed to mean good health and are called medicine beads. Clothes are like those worn in Europe or America called kwee
