Page 001 – Good Movies

2004

50 first dates – funny, but unlike most of sandler's movies, this one isnt stupid.

along came polly – pretty fun but lacking in a lot of areas.  its on my good list, but barely.

the forgotten – the trip is more captivating than the destination in this well made sci-fi thriller.  the ending is forgettable, but there are quite a few tense moments throughout the film.  recommended by me, especially if you liked the x-files.

hellboy – good action, cool effects and characters, humor, and an all around good time.  its solid.

hero – visually stunning film with jaw-dropping fight choreography.  the moral of the story is a little sappy, but it was poetically done in what seems to be a classically chinese manner.

kill bill vol 2 – probably better than the first and an all around solid movie, just a notch below great.

man on fire – stylishly well made film fueled by a man’s vengeance and his love renewed by the innocence of a little girl.

the passion of the christ – in the end it is still thought provoking, despite flaws.

the punisher – well made action film that is funny and smart.  not perfect, but its close.

spiderman 2 – cheesy in parts, but overall very entertaining.

2003

american splendor – drab look at life, interesting and funny and even kind of happy.  all about being normal.

american wedding – not the best movie, but the funny is funny.

big fish – charming tale of a father and son.

charlie's angels: full throttle – unchecked action for vegetative pleasure.

daddy day care – cute little film.  nothing cutting edge, but enjoyable as a light-hearted family film.

house of sand and fog – severely dramatic film that touches on morality and the consequences of making unsound decisions.  good performances throughout and nice camerawork strengthen the impact of a somewhat abstract plot.

the human stain – nice performances in a somewhat interesting but overdone story.  borderline average.

the hunted – intense struggle between teacher and pupil.

just married – a couple just married are having a tough go of it, and it struck a chord of truth in me.

kill bill vol 1 – well made tale of revenge, martial arts style, with masterful fight scenes.

lord of the rings: the return of the king – end of the epic series, probably the best of the series.

pirates of the caribbean: the curse of the black pearl – instant classic pirate film.

runaway jury – entertaining and interesting court drama.

stuck on you – funny, sweet movie.

the triplets of belleville – unique and weird, interesting to sit through.

uptown girls – sweet story that tugs on your heartstrings.

x2: x-men united – good action and pretty good acting.

2002

the bourne identity – well-paced action film.

catch me if you can – very well made, charming criminal caper.

i spy – solid funny movie.

max – interesting look at hitler before his rise to power.

monsturd – ridiculous.  toilet humor.

punch-drunk love – odd and off-kilter love story told from the point of view of a man trying to cope with his dysfunctions.

suicide club – very unusual and morbid film that makes a significant social commentary.

the tuxedo – jackie chan with a neat story.

2001

from hell – jack the ripper with interesting interpretation.

happenstance – cute french film about destiny.

jin-roh – difficult but interesting with artfully drawn animation.

2000

argentosoma vol 1 - another reality – nicely drawn animι with a conventional theme.  this first volume leaves a little to be desired.

battlefield earth – revolt of the man-beasts.  not as bad as people make it out to be.

the cell – visual feast, at times disturbing, with a unique concept.  despite occasional poorly planned diversions and a limited plot, this is a film which sets itself apart.

the nightmare before christmas – mildly creepy, but beneath the skin it is sweet and enjoyable.  lots of songs though.

unbreakable – what a real life comic hero might be like.  well done and atmospheric.  dark.

1999

election – unique, quirky, character driven film worth watching.

the thirteenth floor – good sci-fi flick despite cheese.

1998

home fries – a very funny and quirky movie.  close to perfect.

1996

fargo – interesting true story with interesting characters.

miyuki-chan in wonderland – cutesy fluff with mature situations, it’s a bit of silly fun.  nice title music, sucky background music.

1995

the adventures of kotetsu – unfinished series with some cool elements.  well drawn.

1989

shintaro katsu's zatoichi – well filmed but violent film with an intriguing hero.

1987

the princess bride – classic off-beat fairy tale.  funny and charming.

1977

the rescuers – artistically unique disney film that is full of memorable characters.
