Preseason football practices — or camp, as coaches like to call it — gets under way Monday afternoon for the No. 1-ranked Georgia Bulldogs and, in the eyes of the players, that's a lot better than what they've been doing to date. Elissa Eubanks/[email protected] (ENLARGE) Matthew Stafford returns to start at quarterback for the third consecutive season.   Curtis Compton/[email protected] (ENLARGE) Georgia has at least a dozen to choose from, they will led by senior Mohamed Massaquoi.   Your Turn Does Georgia have all the tools to be national champions?   Yes   No Voter Limit: Once per Hour View Poll Results RELATED STORIES Georgia begins practice eyeing title run  Colleges speed up football  New college football rules for 2008  Famous UGA fans talk about the No. 1 ranking  Some fans think Georgia is overrated         • More UGA coverage "We're excited and ready," said Stafford, a junior who returns to start at quarterback for the third consecutive season. "The offseason is kind of a long process, with mat drills and spring practice and summer workouts. But that's all working up to this point. It's going to be hot out there. We all know it. But it's helps you get mentally tough and we're looking forward design your own jersey to getting as good as we can get." By nybco newark new jersey all accounts, that's expected to be pretty good. This past Friday the Bulldogs, who finished last season ranked No. 2, were picked No. 1 in the USA Today/Coaches poll. The Associated Press poll won't come out until the middle of the month but, if it's anything like the dozens of preseason magazines and Web sites that came out with rankings this summer, Georgia will be at least a Top 5 team. That can be a very good thing if handled right, coach Mark Richt said. "If you use it as motivation," Richt said. "The process is what's important. How you go about your business is important. That's what we have to focus on to be in position to win anything." Here are some issues Georgia jersey central power will have to address as it prepares to kick off the 2008 season against Georgia Southern at 12:30 p.m. on Aug. 30 at Sanford Stadium. Will offseason discipline problems be manifested on field? Georgia has had eight players arrested since its Sugar Bowl victory over Hawaii this past January. That makes it one of the worst offseasons in that regard since Richt took over in 2001. It already has had an impact on the team in that five players will miss games. One player was dismissed from the team, two others are indefinitely suspended and two more will sit out a total of three games. But it also has affected the team in other ways. Even though the majority of the team is doing the right things, the negative publicity has created a perception that the Bulldogs have a lot of players of questionable character. The question now is whether the lack of discipline off the field will translate into issues on the field. Identifying a dependable place-kicker to replace Coutu At Georgia, it's taken for granted that the Bulldogs will have a scoring machine at placekicker. That certainly was the case runnemede borough new jersey with Brandon Coutu, who never missed a PAT, made a school-record 80 percent of his field goal attempts and scored 273 points in his career. The Bulldogs recruited highly touted kicker Blair Walsh from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., to fill those shoes. But that's a tall order for a freshman against a tough schedule in which several games could be decided by field goals. And other than Walsh, the Dogs would have to turn to Brian Mimbs or Drew Butler, punting specialists who have never cranford township new jersey attempted a placement kick in a college game. Losing their best snapper, Jeff Henson, was no small thing for the Bulldogs either. Stafford must show improvement and assume leadership Stafford remains high on NFL draft boards and is nicknamed new jersey the colony "The Truth" because he has all the tools to be the best quarterback in the country. But he has to throw the football with more accuracy than he has to date. Coach Mike Bobo wants to see new jersey democratic primary Stafford's career best neighborhood new jersey 54.5 completion percentage rise into the 60s and his interceptions continue to decrease into single digits. Meanwhile, Stafford relinquished a leadership role to veterans such as Thomas Brown and Fernando Velasco the last two seasons but must grab the reins in his third season as a starter. So far he's talking the part. "Being the leader of this team I believe it's my responsibility to get the guys ready," he said. "Here in practice is the best time to do it. You're not going to show up on the 30th and be ready to play without putting some time and effort into it. That's what you do now." Settle on a lineup on the offensive front Most observers are counting offensive line as a strength for the Bulldogs in 2008 and they definitely have accrued a lot of young talent up front. Three freshmen held down starting spots last season and rookies also held down the majority of backup positions. But only two players are slated to start in the same positions they played last season and the loss of center Velasco —and tackle Chester Adams to a lesser extent — can't be over emphasized. Settling on a rotation and having them jell in camp is a must. "We lost some guys, some guys are moving. It's hard to tell what we'll look like," Stafford said. "We've got an idea of who the seven or eight guys will be battling to be in the five and it will be determined out there on the practice field. But I'm confident in them. I know Trinton [Sturdivant's] going to be my left tackle and I know Chris Davis is going to be in there somewhere. I know everybody out there can play. I think we're going to be fine." Find a new jersey putting greens big-play receiver and determine a rotation If nothing else, Georgia has a lot of wide receivers to choose from — at least a dozen — and there is a wealth of talent and experience led by senior Mohamed Massaquoi. But the Bulldogs have to find a replacement for Sean Bailey, their leading receiver last season and biggest deep threat. Seniors Kenneth Harris and Demiko Goodman will be given first shot to that end. But Georgia inked one of the top receiver prospects in America in A.J. Green and early enrollee Tavarres King wowed coaches and teammates over the spring and summer and several underclassmen are gunning for the job. Find a speed rusher and develop some depth at D-end There's very little missing from the Dogs' defense this season but they will surely women s centers new jersey miss Sugar Bowl MVP and NFL draft pick Marcus Howard at defensive end. The good news is Georgia returns junior Rod Battle, who started all 13 games opposite Howard last season, and seniors Jeremy Lomax and Jarius Wynn played a lot the last season. And the Bulldogs have recruited vigorously at the position the past couple of years. Redshirt freshmen such as Neland Ball and Justin Houston and redshirt sophomore Demarcus Dobbs will get their opportunity to step up. Vote for this story! New Jersey Pride's young star is a 'lacrosse rat' A D V E R T I S E M E N T Printer-friendly version     Email story link New Jersey Pride's young star is a 'lacrosse rat' Merrick Thomson brings his opportunistic attack skills to MLL match in Hillsboro By Zach Stratton The Portland Tribune, Aug 2, 2008 COURTESY OF NEW JERSEY PRIDE Merrick Thomson, 24, ranks second in Major League Lacrosse in scoring this season. He'll lead the New Jersey Pride against the Philadelphia Barrage in a regular-season ending game Aug. 9 at Hillsboro Stadium. In only his first full season in Major League Lacrosse, New Jersey Pride attackman Merrick Thomson has been a nightmare for opposing defenses. And the Philadelphia Barrage will be well aware of that when the two teams face each other at Hillsboro Stadium new jersey psychiatric nurses association on Saturday, Aug. 9 at 7:30 p.m. In a sport that is gaining popularity across the country, commuter lot new jersey turnpike Thomson, 24, has been around the game his whole life. Growing up in Hamilton, Ontario, Thomson played outdoor, or box, lacrosse before heading to the University of Albany to continue his lacrosse career. After arriving at Albany, Thomson wasted no time in making a name for himself. In 2004, he was the America East Conference rookie of the year and a first-team all-conference selection. By the time he graduated, he was a team captain and third-team All-American. Thomson knew he was ready to take his game to the next level in 2007, but it did not happen the way he would have liked. Thomson and his college teammate, Frank Resetarits, ended up missing an important event when they were driving back from the Final Four and attended a new providence new jersey retirement community dinner banquet. “It was the same weekend as the draft, and we were driving up and didn’t end up going to the (draft) combine,” Thomson says. “We didn’t think it was going to be that big of a deal.” It turns out that it was a big deal. Thomson wasn’t picked, and Resetarits wasn’t drafted until the third round. With five games left in the MLL season, Thomson was picked up by the Pride. “We got lucky to get him,” New Jersey coach Peter Jacobs says, “because he didn’t basketball practice jersey come to the draft combine the year previously, so he kind of slipped through everyone’s radar, and we got the chance to pick him up.” It didn’t take long for Thomson to adjust to professional outdoor lacrosse. He scored 10 points, including two hat tricks, in his five games with the Pride that season. Even though Thomson wasn’t able play the entire 2007 MLL season, he was chosen No. 2 overall by the Philadelphia Wings in the 2008 National Lacrosse League draft, the indoor league, where he was a teammate with Jacobs, now his coach. With a year of indoor lacrosse under his belt, Thomson was ready to begin a new outdoor season. He is second in the MLL in scoring with 47 points, having scored 38 goals cockapoo breeders new jersey and dished out nine assists in 11 games played for a team that is 5-6 and fighting for its playoff life. As an attack man, Thomson knows his main job is to score goals. “I’m just opportunistic, and hopefully my team looks for me a lot, too, so whatever they throw at me, hopefully I can catch and put it in the back of the net,” he says. The transition from college outdoor lacrosse to the professional league seemed almost easy for Thomson, which was not a shock to his coach. “It didn’t really surprise me this year how well he’s played after playing joe o connor new jersey with him in the indoor league,” Jacobs says. “Last year, he started at attack the last couple ozzie smith jersey games, and you could see the talent was there. And when I played with him in indoor this year, it was one of those things where I saw that he is going to be one heck of a player when he gets the players around him.” Thomson is beginning to get those players around him, and he makes sure to point out that they are just as valuable to the team as he is. “You can’t just say it’s me, because there newark new jersey buyer agents are a lot of guys doing a lot of the other work,” Thomson says. “The midfielders are drawing a lot of attention, because they are top players, too, so they (the defense) have to respect them. So I’m just finding the right holes and getting lucky with a few of my shots.” Thomson is happy with the way he is playing, but he is even more satisfied with how the young Pride are improving. “The team’s definitely coming along,” he says. “We’ve come a long way since I got here last year. We had a big draft this year, and we have a lot of the top rookies, and they’re definitely helping out. I think we’re just working together as a team and everything is just working out pretty good right now.” While the team is improving rapidly and there is still a slim chance that New Jersey can sneak into the playoffs, the team ticonderoga romanesque revival jersey city has struggled at times this year. Coming from a historically successful program at Albany, Thomson isn’t used to having a losing record. “It’s definitely frustrating,” he says. “It’s tough to get guys to practice jersey camera when this isn’t their full-time job. It’s difficult and frustrating, but then you’re also blessed that ac milan jersey autograph you get to play professional lacrosse on the weekends.” Thomson is still enrolled at classes at Albany. He has one year left in graduate school before receiving his oakland public schools new jersey Education Administration degree. In the future, he would ideally like to pursue a career in college athletic administration. He even hopes he can continue to play pro lacrosse while juggling a job such as university athletic director. Until that day comes, bridgewater new jersey fire department however, he’ll remain focused on playing the game enjoys so monmouth univerity new jersey much. “He’s a guy that loves lacrosse,” Jacobs says. “He’s a lacrosse rat – like a gym rat, but he’s a lacrosse rat. He’s one of those guys who respects the game, and I think he could be around the sport for a while.” Digg     Del.icio.us     Newsvine     Stumbleupon     Reddit Comment on this story • Readers are solely responsible for the content of the comments they post here.
