New Jersey military projects approved by U.S. House

Inquirer Staff Writer
The defense budget approved yesterday by the House of Representatives includes $179.1 million for 10 projects at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, including a $41.9 million helicopter hangar.
The fiscal 2009 spending plan - likely to pass the Senate this fall - would help assure the future of the 60-square-mile installation in Burlington and Ocean Counties, officials said.

Smith cited the particular importance of the funding to the future of Lakehurst workers.

Smith's district includes Lakehurst Naval Air Engineering Station and a portion of Fort Dix. Saxton's District includes McGuire and a portion of Fort Dix.
McGuire is Burlington County's largest employer. The bases employ 17,000 people, and have an estimated annual economic impact exceeding $2 billion.
Base Projects
The proposed 2009 funding calls for:
$3.4 million for a firing range at bay head borough new jersey Fort Dix in support of annual weapons training for more than 30,000 Army Reserve and National Guard soldiers.
$27 million for a storage and maintenance facility at Lakehurst to serve Army Reserve operations. The warehousing facility will be 55,000 square feet, and the maintenance shop will be 20,000 square feet.
$15.4 million for an aircraft carrier advanced arresting gear testing facility at Lakehurst.
Also, it includes the following for McGuire Air Force Base:
$41.9 million for the final phase of constructing helicopter hangars and a Marine Air Group headquarters.
$37 million for a Navy aviation supply department and operations facility.
$28.9 million for the Navy fleet logistics operations facility, which would provide round-the-clock worldwide air logistics support for active and reserve units.
$12 million for aviation support facility hangar renovations.
$7.4 million for a joint school closings new jersey college support center to serve deploying military and their families.
$4.3 million for a Navy C-130 flight simulator facility.
