up, up, and away....

So... now you've got the tabs to play like Matt, but what good are the tabs without a bass?  You could go with something cheap like my cheesy little Ibanez GRS-100... ::cough:: (Hey, it plays, ok?  That's good enough for me...)   But my cheap bass is fine for me, I am not a bass-playing god like Matt Freeman.

It took me a while to finally get some strait inforamation on what Matt Freeman's equiptment is.  I found a magazine article from 'Bass Player' (9/1996) and that's where I got the majority of my information.  Also, keep in mind that the article is from 1996, so things might have changed since then, but be happy, this is all you get!!

For years, Matt Freeman used a P-Bass and only experimented with other instruments.   Then he found the Fender Jazz (oohs and ahhs follow).  "For a while", says Matt, "I had this thing about buying cheap basses - you know Im a punk rocker, and all that. Theyd sound okay, but when I went on tour theyd fall apart. Finally, I just saved my money and bought two Jazz Basses. They sound really good, and theyve got very thin necks, which helps me because my hands are small."   (Matt Freeman?  Small hands?  Smell like cabbage?  Could Matt be in truth a carney?)

When Rancid started recording, Matt decided that it was time for a change.  He was used to buying whatever looked like it would withstand the road and wouldn't be too huge of a loss if it got broken or stolen.  For 'Rancid' and 'Let's Go'  he used an Acoustic 320 head and 4x15 cabinet and the P-Bass.  In the studio, doing '...And Out Come the Wolves'  he asked producer Rob Cavallo what kind of bass Mike Drint of Greenday used on 'Dookie' and he told him it was an Ampeg SVT-II Pro.  He went out and bought one right away.

Another issue of Bass Player from 1998 said that Bloodclot was recorded with his RB2001 /w 8x10 and Acoustic 320 /w 4x15 both running at the same time.

Satisfied?  Okay, now get out there and make some noise!
