Dear
Christian Friends:
Here
is Missions News as it Happens.
Very early in our ministry here in the Yucatan Peninsula, we
encountered a very frustrating problem
Every time
we build a Baptist Church, within only a
few months, the Catholic Church has managed to start a mission of their own
within only a few hundred feet from us.
However, even though it might be considered by many people as
unethical, it certainly is not illegal.
Then about
ten years ago, they went a step farther
and began a home for orphan children which they called, “El Niño Jesus”.
Since its very beginning, the Catholic orphanage has been plagued by
internal problems. On two or three
different occasions, the priest-in-charge has suddenly been transfered to some
other area. There are always rumors of
little girls becoming pregnant and of little boys being sexually abused.
About
three years ago, the wife of our state governor sent some children to us
because, as she said, she “did not
want any more children sent to that institution.”
For this
Christmas Season, all the children of the Catholic Home were farmed-out
to various supporting families in order that the employees have a
vacation. Meanwhile, the government
secretly locked the gates to that property.
Several
times this week, people from the State Dept. of Family Development and from the Human Rights Commission have
gone all through our house to find places for more little ones. Although they do not know it yet, when those
ten children return on Monday morning,
they will be brought directly to our home at El Palomar Ranch. Their little bundles of personal belongings
are already here.
During the
coming days, please pray for these new children as well as for us as we help
them to overcome many very depressing emotional, spiritual, and physical problems.
