RAY AGNEW RETIRES, BUT WILL REMAIN WITH RAMS
MACOMB, IL.--Defensive tackle Ray Agnew announced his retirement as
a player on Wednesday and Rams coach Mike Martz announced that Agnew
will remain in the organization as Director of Player Development/Team
Pastor.
Agnew, 33, a former No. 1 draft choice of the New York Giants and
the 10th player selected in the 1990 draft, completed 11 seasons in
the NFL, leaving a mark of fiery competitiveness and inspirational
leadership.
Agnew came to the Rams from the New York Giants as an unrestricted
free agent and was a vital contributor on the field and in the
lockerroom as the Rams emerged to win Super Bowl XXXIV in 1999.
"We're very fortunate and excited that Ray has chosen to
remain with the Rams," said head coach Mike Martz. "He will
work with our players in a number areas as well as our coaching staff
and front office. We're losing an outstanding player, but gaining an
exceptional man for the organization."
Agnew played in 157 career games and 6 playoff games. Agnew
recorded 23.5 sacks, forced six fumbles, recovered five, and had one
interception.
"I've played football almost all my life," said Agnew.
"You know there will come a time when it's over. It's not easy,
but I'm comfortable with my decision and looking forward to a new
opportunity." With a smile, Agnew added, "I won't miss
training camp practices."
