2331, 6 years after the Centaur class was in full production, it was
decided to build a more heavily armed counterpart to add diversity and
strength to the already diverse Starfleet. The rapid success of
the Excelsior class design brought a whole new range of options
to Starfleet's Shipbuilding Policy of the late 23rd and early 24th
centuries. Many designs, almost too many to produce, sprang forth
making extensive use of Excelsior class components. The
largest Excelsior class variant is the Omaha Class Heavy
BattleCruiser.
A third nacelle gives
the Victory the outstanding speed and power of a dreadnought, but armament
was scaled down for a heavy frigate. 4 Type VIII Heavy/Mega Phaser Units
were installed on top of the saucer, at the extreme rear, able to fire
fore and aft.
These
vessels, powerful, yet agile have the ideal blend speed and firepower
that other ship find hard to match.
