The Pompeii Destroyer Line is a take off on the Saladin class Destroyer introduced in the early half of the 23rd century.  It deletes the neck section and adds a second warp nacelle.  The nacelles themselves are attached to the underside of the primary hull, moving all essential propulsion systems into the saucer and cutting the crew compliment in half.  The Pompeii is equipped with standard defenses, made up of 6 Type VI Phaser Banks, 2 2nd class Photon Torpedo Launchers and a standard deflector shield system.  After the introduction of the Constitution class Cruiser and Miranda Class Frigate, Starfleet achieved what it called a "Class One Triad", whereas Destroyers, Cruisers and Frigates became the mainstay of the Fleet.  The USS Pompeii was the flagship of Vice Admiral Vaughn Rittenhouse when he engineered a coup against the Federation  Council in 2267.  The Pompeii was and all hands aboard killed when the vessel colided with the Federation class Dreadnought Star Empire, which was a key part of the coup.  The Pompeii Destroyer Line served with notable distinction before being decomissioned in 2292 after 62 years of faithful service to Starfleet.  The Mars and Pontiac remain active as front line training vessels homeported at Starbase One, Earth.
