The Gettysburg class represents the top of the Destroyer line in all aspects.  As with the Intrepid class, the Gettysburg was the testbed for several new developments in starship construction.  Actually concieved as the first prototype for the Intrepid class Scout, this design incorporates many of the same qualities including new and more efficient warp engines, bio-neural computer systems and sophisticated sensor arrays.  Like her smaller cousin, the Gettysburg incorporates a middle-class armament package made up of 8 Type X Phaser Arrays and 6 Type III Burst Fire Torpedo Launchers, 4 in the secondary hull, two in the upper pod.  In 2372, all ships were fitted with 4 Type XII Phaser Emitters, their worth graphically demonstrated on the Sovereign class.

From a design stanpoint, this design is influenced by the Intrepid, Excelsior, Enterprise and Ambassador classes.  The Gettysburg can be considered an evolutionary stepping stone to the immense Eagle class Command Cruiser.
