I am not sure how many people on the Rams board knew what we were getting when we signed Trent Green this past offseason.  I did!!

Sure, he came from the Redskins...has only started for 3/4's of a year...he is a local boy.... our new Offensive Coordinator was his QB coach...and he signed a HUGE contract.  Other than that, he was a relatively unknown commodity among most Rams fans.

But I actually had an association with Green last year.  Albeit an obscure one, but none the less myself and Trent worked together to achieve a common goal.

Fantasy Football Supremacy!!

For those of you not in the know, fantasy football is a game where a group of 10 people draft a team of players from the actual NFL talent pool and use the stats  they accumulate during the season to score points.  You play each member of your league head to head and the player with the most wins at the end of the season is the league's champion.  Without going into too much detail, the QB's in our league were scored as follows-

Touchdown(rushing or pass)- 6 points
Two point conversion(rush or pass)- 2 points
For each 50 yards passing- 1 point
Fumbles- minus 2 points
Interceptions- minus 2 points

Now back to the story... My draft day couldn't have gone better, in my opinion.  I was stacked at the QB position, with John Elway, Brad Johnson, and Glenn Foley.  I was set..plenty of depth!!  Or so I thought.  The Rams took care of Brad Johnson in week 2 and Elway went down a couple of weeks later.  I was stuck with Foley (who had been benched by this time for Testaverde) so I was left without a starting QB.  I raided the waiver wires, looking for help.  I had missed out on Randall Cunningham, so the pickings were just a tad bit slim.  The best scorer available was this guy from the Redskins..Trent Green.  His stats were impressive, but I had never heard of him.  I decided to release Johnson and Foley and picked up Green and Bubby Brister (who was holding his own, but nothing too spectacular).

I designated Brister as the starter, but it didn't take long for me to see what Green was all about.  I started watching the Redskins whenever I could, and quickly moved Green to my number one QB.

You could tell by watching Trent that he was a playmaker with a nice arm and who was deadly in the red zone.  His TDs to INTs ratio was exceptional for a first year starter, and he averaged around 15 fantasy points a game for me  (Steve Young had a 22 point average..Banks was around 6 ppg if I remember correctly).  I thought to myself "Trent Green has some game in him!"  The only negative he had was the fumbling, but any QB will put the ball on the ground when sacked over 50 times.

We did well together, and all though we didn't win our league, we played tough the remainder of the season.  Trent kept my team respectable.  He was the most consistent player on my roster.

What this adds up to for Rams fans is more production by the offensive unit. I think that our team has far better playmakers than the 98 Redskins. Green had Michael Westbrook, Stephen Alexander,  and Skip Hicks with Washington... now he has Isaac Bruce, Torry Holt, Marshall Faulk and a much better offensive line to protect him.  Watch the numbers pile up..this unit will light up the scoreboard for years to come!
