Last season, the Rams offense was totally incompetent. Rhome, his side-kick Coury,  and Banks, Kennison Gandy and Moore were all scape-rammed .

Rhome was touted as a great QB coach, who usually has a big back as the center of his O (Riggins & George). He was fired by Fischer/Adams for the same reasons as with the Rams--his play calls were too predictable and his QB projects weren't improving as fast as hoped (Banks & McNair). However, he didn't have much to work with last season--there was no back, big or small, no goto receivers, no TE and his QB regressed. Personally, I was surprised he was there last year, when it was already clear he wasn't helping Banks.

The new OC, Martz, is moving upward from a QB coach understudying Norv Turner. I have seen Turner's O at perfection with Aikman, effective with Frerotte and flop with Shuler and Frerotte. There is an emphasis on quick reads, timing routes and low turn-overs by the QB. The system goes as far as the QB comprehension--for instance it was scaled down from Aikman to Frerotte.

What should help Martz is that he has groomed his starting QB for the last two years for this offense and instead of Kennison, he has #1 pick Holt and instead of JMoore/Holcombe, he has All-Pro Faulk. Unless there is an injury to his QB, Martz would have to be a complete moron not to have an explosive offense.

With the coaching shake-up in KC, the Rams added an other ex-NFL coach (DV, Gantz, Hannifan & White), Saunders. This guy is known for his work with Chandler, Winslow, Joiner and the explosive UTenn. teams of Gault era. He was a long-time assistant to former Coach of the Year Mike White at Cal. He is also a SJSU Trojan like DV. There has been great hype about him. Fast Eddie said his work was evident in Az-zahir's improvement. I bet with a healthy Bruce, Holt, Hakim, Proehl, and NFL-E star Sellers, he will look like a genius. As the man he replaces said, if Ike would have remained healthy, I would be asst coach of the year.

Ike's hamstrings weren't healthy and so Rhome's side-kick Coury retired. He didn't seem to improve Kennison, but that may be more EK's fault. What appears to be evident is Saunders communicates with his men more and has more energy.

Speaking of Chargers, Ed White went back to the college levels, so Joe Matsko replaced him. I have great respect for Hannifan and so I assume Matsko is a good understudy. I liked JM's work with the great Scott Gragg last season. Speaking of Ed White, his star pupil, Kyle Turley replaced McCullom,  who Matsko coached with the Saints and recommended. I bet it is because of his confidence in McC (and MFaulk hit on the cap) that Weigart was let go.

The Rams coaches are all intertwined with previous relationships, which I think is good. There seems to be strong San Jose State (DV alum) tie between many of them.
