It's
beginnings:
It began in the early 1960's with a small
group of volunteers as a bucket brigade. A small portable pump was
acquired in 1968. The same year, this tiny bucket brigade was officially recognized as a department with a chief and 18 members.
Also during this same year, the first fire truck was bought from the school
board for a total of $1.
The first pumper truck (625 gallons) was purchased in 1971 for $35,000.
The second 625 gallon pumper truck was bought in 1995 at a price of $100,000.
This is the truck the department is now using. Along with the proper
fire fighting vehicle, the department is now fully equipped with
full turn out gear (Bunker Gear)
Twice a month (every second Monday) the department meet in the Ramea
Fire Hall. At meetings they practice ladder drills, first aid, how
to and practice using the self-contained breathing apparatus, ladder rescues,
ground rescues, hose laying, fighting fires in trenches, burning of old
car and truck wrecks, setting controlled fires to practice with the SCBA
(Self Contained Breathing Apparatus), rescues from houses and shipboard
fire fighting. They also conduct inspections of public buildings
and carry out a public fire fighting program.
The Department has been very active within this community, from which a
lot of support is given to them. Over the years, the fire department has
held music festivals, organizes the annual Santa Claus parade. The
fire department is supported by the Ladies Auxliary which raises 80% -
90% of funds to support the operating costs.
