2005
Welcome to page 5 of year 2005, and again it is time to get busy in repairing the xmas lights, as winter is here, with the heater on, I guess the cold days and nights is a good time as any to get started on this long project of repairing them all, this year, I have my new beloved Wife to assist me, that should make the task easier, (maybe I will send her high up the ladder when required lol). Now late September, all the lights are repaired and ready to set up in late Octover/November, some letters have been sent out to enhance the support of Donations of goods to be put in the raffle, Still odd rain days around and I hope these clear away in the next 4 weeks, this may be my last year of putting up this huge display due to the degeneration of my Kneees and Back, it is becomming more difficult to do each year, time will tell. Now with only one week to go to turn on, the 25th November, much of the lights are up and ready, with many months of repairs and alterations being done over the past months, the Cherry Picker arrived today ready to do the palms, and the roof is finished with just the big net to go up, my Wife Fay helped a lot this year and helped raise the big fireworks star mast up this year, tricking her to come up on the roof with me, she did a fantastic job, making me proud of her, she is excited to share her first xmas lights display with me this year, no photos at the moment, this years new features are a new archway across the driveway and we hope to put lighted grape lights on it, with maybe some tinsel, 2 new front securety poles were made with added security sensor lights on them, for added protection against vandals after we go to bed at night. With 2 nights to go to turn on,,have finished all the high work with the cherry picker and now is just the front garden and mid lawn to do and the signs, it has been very hot in the last week and with fighting off the flu and sunburn,i've had a busy time trying to get all ready in time, some people have come by when i've had the lights on for 10 minutes to test, as they can be seen from some distance away. The lights have been on for 2 weeks now and crowds and donations have been poor due to cold nights and light rain , we have only had about 4 nights free of showers, so disapointing, I doubt if I'll raise the target at this point, and there are too many other displays around these days, I am the only one in a 5 kilometer radious of here now so it seems people don't travel unless they are all close, but this year I have had many regulars who come most years and say how fantastic it looks, it does this year, but we have had a lot of wind damage up in the cocos palms with the lights not working, Saturday 11th was very busy, best night we have had due to the lousy weather, but the cool winds and nights are back again, GRRRRR, some pics taken by the Indipendant Newspapers that come out this Tuesday and so should there be oa pic of the lights in the Community Newspaper on Tuesday, as I feel at this time, I won't collect any where near the amount of money this year for the PMH kids due to the unseasional weather, the traffic and donations are very poor, which to me is very disapointing, in one of these pictures each side of Santas wishing well are lights like chinese crackers, very bright and slightly blured in the picture, these have drawn some attraction from people,Last night Monday 12th Dec, we came 2nd in the City of Bayswater Xmas lights competition again, we took off 2nd last year, so a gift Certificate and a Cheque for $200 and a free 3 course buffet feast at the tax payers exspence was great. The picture in the Community Paper is too difficult to scan, and its not one of the best iv'e seen, the write up below says, (Header): John Roe, pictured, of Marriot Way, Morley raises money for PMH. When the sun goes down on these suburban homes, strangers and neighbours stand transfixed by the sight of tens of thousands of Christmas lights blazing in the dark. They have come to stare at the culmination of months of hard work by John Roe, whose Christmas lights displays have been turned on. Mr Roe has been putting up his display for 13 years and raising money for PMH for eight: he has raised $39000, Whether its $50 - $50000, it's all going to the kids he said. For most of these enthusiasts it began with putting up a few strings of fairy lights for thier own Children, but has simply grown from there. It starts small and ends up as an obsession, I began with 2 strands of lights said Mr Roe whose house has his own made Reigndeers, Santa and Elves. Mr Roe said he do'es all his own work, but does need some help with some of the unwieldy items, Christmas arrival is a bitter sweet time for Mr Roe: he said he looks forward to turning them on for the first time, but dreads the day they are all turned off. The hardest thing is to start pulling it all down, he said. You can see Mr Roe's lights every night at 22 Marriot way, Morley. (end) I have a few good pictures in this page so far, so it does'nt matter if I don't get a copy of the one of me in the paper. Saturday night the 17th Dec, was a great night with PMH "Stitches" the Hospital Bear here for an hour entertaining the small kids and the crowds were fairly heavy, which is good, hard to tell with only 6 more sleeps for the excited kids this year, how much money we have raised, but my darling Fay has been a great help with manning the donations table for those entering the raffle draw, being her first Xmas Lights, she is enjoying the scene and meeting new people, well Xmas Eve went of with a great hit again this year with an estimated 1800 people here, although a little cool than last year,,,"Stitches" the Hospital bear played a great hit with the little ones, then Santa on the Fire engine with Police escort was also fantastic, the kids seemed more interested in the Fire engine Picture by Wayne and Police car, than poor old Santa giving out free lollies, we had 2 tons of goods donated to us only 3 days before Xmas day from Chrisco Hampers, 28 cartons of frozen Foods in Eskys, so we had to panic around the place to get a loan of a freezer trailer to store the frozen hampers, as well as 28 cartons of dry goods, now boxing day, most have been sold for way under value with only about 8 of each left, but feel sure to sell these at $80 and $50 for the toatal for the Kids of PMH, these pics are of the Topary tree that Fay made with 1000 clear lights on it and the Bob-Bon cracker, looking hard at the inside lawn you can see dark objects, they are new optical fibre lights surrounding one of 3 star nets, pegged in the lawn, it will be good to finish in some ways and pull up all the front lawn and lights to get out reticulated bore water back on and get the lawns looking good again, unfortuantly, they suffer for 5000 feet a fair pounding, and also many other lights in the lawn, the new archway was made over the drive way this year, with bunches of grapes hanging down and each grape has a light in them, very spectacular and drew many good comments, as well as a slall Xmas tree with lights on them in the middle of the lawn to the left, through out the 6 weeks we can only pul them all up once to have the lawn mowed, today being Wednesday 28th Dec with only a few more nights to go to New Years Night will be the last night on, unfortuantly, not all the hampers were sold and at the end, we will just have to give them away along with a Hotel Night for 2 voucher that we received very late and never sold, but we feel we have done pretty goodespecially with the donations of hampers selling for $50-$80 each with about 9 left, the pic on the left shows more of the front lawn lights and on the right is the Freezer trailer we borrowed to store the frozen hampers in, for the 1st time ever, it seems we will have to start a 5th bucket of money as 4 are so heavy now, I can barely lift them, so maybe we have ok this year, certainly hope so. The next series of pics were taken by Noami, Fays Grand Daughter one of us two lovers in front of Santa's wishing well and others clearly show the effects of the new rope lights around the Cocos Palm trunks, another showing the 2004 constructed Reigndeers holding a "Happy New Year" sign in thier mouths and paws, many visitors donate mostly coins in Santa's wishing well as I chase the motorists who are unlikely to stop out on the road with an open jug, this method seems to raise plenty of money as it is a poor excuse for people who drive around to these displays and come to view them and stand thier with hands in pockets until promted to donate to the PMH Kids Hospital, of course there are always the ones who say they do not have any money, some times you wonder, while standing there stuffing thier faces with MacDonalds junk food ?, they rather annoy me, such miserable individules, another pic shows the red coloured water in the Fountain which is realy highlighted with red flood lights, well its all over for another year and at this point, half of the lights are down, just the cocos palms and front walls to strip, my knee is playing up badly, so hence the slow pace of pulling them all down, all the money raised was taken to BankWest on the 3rd Jan 2006 and the staff count it in thier own spare time, so now waiting on that phone call of the amount and pick up the Bank Cheque, most people who won prizes in the raffle draw have been and collected thier prize last weekend, the remainder may be away still on holidays,,ohhh well thats it for this year 2005, just the final figure to add below.....thankyou John and Fay......
