POETRY

License
by Michael Tartàglia, © 2001
When your fresh new license comes out of the envelope,
Do not be overwhelmed. Instead, step inside your brand new car,
Inherited from your family, or at least borrowed from a good friend:
     Be careful with the accelerator.
Do not hit the brakes too hard.
Stop at all yielding signs -- look both ways.
The reddest of lights turn green after a while.
Once you get the hang of all this,
Hit cruise control and coast until the tank empties!

Feel free to pick up passengers.
Assist those stuck on the side of the road.
Do not feel ashamed to ask for help yourself!
Maybe you will loan this auto to some person, some place.

That person will need to know how it operates,
So be just and active and guide that person through!
Talk about the little quirks this auto has:
Do not start gloating -- strengths become apparent anyway.
     Never fear talking about defects.
Make others feel at ease -- it prompts smoother rides.
It is possible for an auto to have two owners.
Later on, if you know and can trust that person well,
He or she may bring another in need of your help.

Just as your instructors have assisted you,
Do not deny all the privileges your license brings.
