The Abyssinian
Abyssinian kitten
Abyssinian kitten aged 10 weeks old
The Abyssinian is a shorthaired cat of medium build, muscular and lithe, with a ticked coat. The coat is fine, short and close-lying. All Abyssinians have a ticked coat. Ticking refers to three or four bands of colour on each individual hair, similar to the coat of a wild rabbit or hare.

It used to be thought that the Abyssinian originates from the sacred cats of Egypt, as comparisons have been made to the ancient Egyptian cat. It is known that the Romans brought cats from Egypt to England. Others believe it descended from the African wild cat.

Abyssinians are extremely affectionate, intelligent, playful, inquisitive and cheeky. They make great companion cats, and because they are very intelligent, they can quite easily be taught tricks and some retrieve scrunched up balls of paper for their owners to throw for them. Abyssinians make wonderful pets with great personalities.
