ANNOUNCING A NEW BOOK BY ROBERT MAURO And One You Might Be in If You Know Mr. Mauro Sucking Air, Doing Wheelies: Memoirs Of A Fifties Polio Survivor is the touching, unforgettable autobiography of Robert Mauro, a 1950's polio survivor. Published on the 50th anniversary of the discovery of the Salk polio vaccine and spanning the years from 1946 to the present, in its 451 pages you'll see how one baby boomer, despite severe polio, a motorized wheelchair and a respirator, goes on to become an artist, the author of six books and a playwright praised by Helen Hayes, the First Lady of the American Theater. It all begins in Queens, New York City with Mr. Mauro growing up in a time when Howdy Doody and Uncle Milty were on every black and white TV in post-war America, and when terrified parents and children feared a deadly plague bourn by the wind: polio. Mr. Mauro contracted polio on his 5th birthday, in 1951. During his life, he has gone from hospital to hospital, doctor to doctor, and endured painful rehabilitation and several surgeries. As a child he ended up in a horrible "special" school for the disabled, but his feisty mother fought to get him into their local Catholic school. Then, as a result of two spinal fusions, Mauro, as a teenager, ends up on home instructions for four years. It is during this time he discovers the joys of painting, reading and playwrighting. Following this he goes on to college during the Vietnam War, which is a time of political assassinations, campus unrest and countless antiwar demonstrations. In college Mr. Mauro begins to suffer from Post Polio Syndrome, severe depression, and he's put on antidepressants and a respirator. Despite all that, Mauro helps found a disability advocacy group at college. He and his disabled friends make the campus accessible and there Mauro meets and befriends a fellow disabled student named Ron Kovic, who goes on to write Born On The Fourth Of July. At college Mauro has his poems and short stories published and his first play is produced. After graduation, he begins to sell him plays, poems and articles, and creates a dating service for the disabled, which is mentioned on the Montel Williams TV show. Mauro goes on to find joy in his art and his writing. He has several intimate relationships, and begin to sell his paintings. Finally, Mauro begins to have his books published and, after several failed love affairs, he finds the love of his life, a nondisabled woman who doesn't care about his disability or his respirator. They fall in love and get engaged. Sucking Air, Doing Wheelies: Memoirs Of A Fifties Polio Survivor says a lot about courage, persistence, perseverance and never letting one's disability disable you. Mr. Mauro's motto has always been "disability doesn't mean inability. " And Sucking Air, Doing Wheelies: Memoirs Of A Fifties Polio Survivor should be a book read by everyone who wants to see what the human spirit is capable of. CLICK HERE TO ORDER
