Bob Mauro's Sculptures

Here are two of the three steps in doing a sculpture in resin. First, I make a clay sculpture on a board, which is not shown. Next I paint liquid latex over the clay sculpture to create a mold. That's on the left. I do a coat a day for a week, adding a lip on the bottom. Then I cut the mold to remove the clay. The mold is then cleaned with soap and water, let dry, and then patched by brushing more latex over the cut. Let it dry and then, fill the mold with water and dump that water into a paper cup. Mark the level where you'll need to fill up to with liquid resin. Next, dry the paper cup thoroughly. Then in the marked paper cup slowly and gently mix the required amount of liquid resin with some special dye, I used black for my police dog, add catalyst. Mix for a few minutes or as directed. Then place the empty mold upside down through a hole cut in a cardboard box to support it. Tape those lips you added in place with duct tape. Mix the liquid resin a bit more then pour it into the mold, outdoors. It really smells terrible and will sicken you if you do it indoors. Also, do this only in warm weather. The resin will get hot from the chemical reaction and dry/harden in a few hours -- at least, to the touch. But let it stand upside down in the box support for a week before cutting it out of the mold. Then you can use a Dremel MotoTool to sand, buff and finish the resin sculpture. To give my police dog a bronze look, I used some bronze Rub & Buff paint.

Here are three more of the sculptures I made using the same process.
