The Ralphs Family
of Hodnet, Shropshire--and the Rest of the World

While adding family history to my personal website I realized that there is so much Ralphs material that it deserved a separate site of its own. Also, more Ralphs family members seem to be online than any other branch of my family! Thought this could be a way for all of us to get acquainted.

I've got quite a few stories which I haven't had a chance to type out yet. (Okay, I confess. I've kind of been procrastinating until I can get a scanner to convert those paper pages to digital text files.) So if any of you have material that's already digital—narratives or photos—contributions would be appreciated. Just send an email first to let me know what you have.

I've also been working on setting up a message board for family members, password protected in the interest of privacy, and will have more info on this as soon as I can get the password set up.

Thanks to all of you who have written. It's great hearing from you.

Ralphs Grocery Company

Considered the pioneer of chain stores and the impetus for the term "supermarket," Ralphs Grocery Company began with an unusual twist of fate. George Albert Ralphs was a bricklayer until an injury sustained in a hunting accident forced him to find work as an apprentice in the grocery business. His first work was at a small store in downtown Los Angeles in 1872. Within a year he had saved enough money to buy his own grocery store and two years later was joined by his brother, Walter, to launch Ralphs Bros. Grocers.
