Trail 600 - The Hanna Flats Nature Trail
In 1926 fire swept through the region surrounding the current location of the Priest Lake Ranger District Headquarters on Highway 57 in the Kaniksu National Forest of the North Idaho Panhandle. Nearly 125 square miles of forest land were destroyed by the fire; however, Hanna Flats was spared - thanks to its moist soil and lack of underbrush. In 1955, the Hanna Flats Cedar Grove was designated a natural area by the Forest Service.
To reach the Nature Trail, depart Highway 2 at the traffic light in Priest River and head north  on Highway 57 for approximately 31 miles. Turn left onto US Forest Service Road 313 and follow the signs to the Hanna Flats trailhead. (Note: Road 313 is  located just south of the Priest Lake airfield and the Ranger District's Headquarters.)

Parking and vault toilets are available at the Trialhead.

This is a short, 3/4-mile long interpretive trail. You can obtain a brochure with the narrative of the trails interpretive markers from the Ranger District's Headqurters.

The photograph at the right was taken from the viewpoint trail (a short departure from the main interpretive trail). It shows the 16 acre grove as it towers above neighboring trees.

Besides the old growth cedar trees that impart feelings of peace and tranquility to the traveller, the grove is also home to a few western white pine trees which are noted for their massive, straight trunks of knotless timber.
