both.
It
means, the relationship should result in maximum individual satisfaction.

CHARACTER
This means that the person should not be an outsider. He should
be a part of the party/group concerned

LEADER AS A SYMBOL OF THE GROUP
The leader must symbolize the ideals of the group. The other
members of the party should be able to respect him.

LEADER AS FATHER
FIGURE
Just like a father protects a family & looks to its
needs similarly a leader should also take care of his group members. A follower
should have similar attachment to his leader as a child has with his father.

LEADER AS IDEOLOGIST
A leader is considered as an ideal by the followers. He is
responsible for conservation of old cultures & the formation of new ideals.

UNDERSTANDING BETWEEN THE LEADER AND THE FOLLOWERS
Good understanding between the leader & the follower
helps the leader to provide proper guidance to the followers. The leader must
be calm & must know the means to bring about a balance between the
different sub groups. He must not be impulsive, irritable.

THE LEADER SHOULD BE ADAPTABLE AND FLEXIBLE
The leader must have the knowledge as to
when he should withdraw & admit his mistakes to his followers. He should be able to adjust to changing
situations.

Psychologists say that when there
is high degree of love & fear, the relationship is that which is commonly
known as PATRIARCH OR
PATERNALISM.
§
When there is high degree of fear
& little/no love, the relationship is ordinarily called TYRANNY
(dictatorship)
§
In a relationship characterized by little emotions whether
love/fear then the leader has the position of an ORGANIZER (followers
are not emotionally attached to him).
§
High degree of love & little
or no fear is leadership in its narrow & pure sense.
