Subject: [RajputWorld ] what we are celebrating & why !!

Dear All,
  Jai Mata Ji Ki,

I would like to share with you the history & quintessence of Deepavali .... the festival of lights ! You might be knowing this... you maybe aware of this....... but like so often we forget the commitments we made the last time we went to temple ......... we do forget so many things in life. Let us understand what we are celebrating & why ! (... if you you have the patience & interest to read through this... )

THE STORY OF DIWALI

Diwali which leads us into Truth and Light is celebrated on a nation-wide scale on Naraka chathurthasi day just on the dawn of Ammavaasa during the Hindu month of Aippasi Month in Tamil Language(Aaso/Aasvayuja/Asvina Months in Hindi langauge)(September/October) every year. It symbolises that age-old culture of our country which teaches us to vanquish ignorance that subdues humanity and to drive away darkness that engulfs the light of knowledge. Diwali, the festival of lights even to-day in this modern world projects the rich and glorious past of our country and teaches us to uphold the true values of life.

The word "Diwali" is the corruption of the Sanskrit word "Deepavali" -- Deepa meaning light and Avali, meaning a row. It means a row of lights and indeed illumination forms its main attraction. Every home - lowly or mightly - the hut of the poor or the mansion of the rich - is alit with the orange glow of twinkling diyas-small earthen lamps - to welcome Lakshmi, Goddess of wealth and prosperity. Multi-coloured Rangoli (the design of the background of this page is of rangoli, also people drawn with rice flour on the grounds into their house, rangoli)designs, floral decorations and fireworks lend picturesness and grandeur to this festival which heralds joy, mirth and happiness in the ensuring year.
This festival is celebrated on a grand scale in almost all the regions of India and is looked upon mainly as the beginning of New Year. As such the blessings of Lakshmi, the celestial consort of Lord Vishnu are invoked with prayers. Even countries like Kenya, Thailand, Trinidad, Siam and Malaya celebrate this festival but in their own ways.
This Diwali festival, it is surmised dates back to that period when perhaps history was not written, and in its progress through centuries it lighted path of thousands to attain the ultimate good and complete ecstasy.

Diwali or more aptly Deepavali is very enthusiastically celebrated for five continuous days and each day has its significance with a number of myths, legends and beliefs.

The First day is called DHANTERAS or DHANTRAYODASHI which falls on the thirteenth day of the month of Kartik. The word "Dhan" means wealth. As such this day of the five-day Diwali festival has a great importance for the rich mercantile community of Western India. Houses and Business premises are renovated and decorated. Entrances are made colourful with lovely traditional motifs of Rangoli designs to welcome the Goddess of wealth and prosperity. To indicate her long-awaited arrival, small footprints are drawn with rice flour and vermilion powder all over the houses. Lamps are kept burning all through the nights. Believing this day to be auspicious women purchase some gold or silver or at least one or two new utensils. "Lakshmi-Puja" is performed in the evenings when tiny diyas of clay are lighted to drive away the shadows of evil spirits. "Bhajans"-devotional songs- in praise of Goddess Laxmi are sung and "Naivedya" of traditional sweets is offered to the Goddess. There is a peculiar
custom in Maharashtra to lightly pound dry coriander seeds with jaggery and offer as Naivedya.

In villages cattles are adorned and worshipped by farmers as they form the main source of their income. In south cows are offered special veneration as they are supposed to be the incarnation of Goddess Lakshmi and therefore they are adorned and worshipped on this day.

A very interesting story about this day is of the sixteen year old son of King Hima. As per his horoscope he was doomed to die by a snake-bite on the fourth day of his marriage. On that particular fourth day of his marriage his young wife did not allow him to sleep. She laid all the ornaments and lots of gold and silver coins in a big heap at the entrance of her husband's boudoir and lighted innumerable lamps all over the place. And she went on telling stories and singing songs. When Yam, the god of Death arrived there in the guise of a Serpent his eyes got blinded by that dazzle of those brilliant lights and he could not enter the Prince's chamber. So he climbed on top of the heap of the ornaments and coins and sat there whole night listening to the melodious songs. In the morning he quietly went away.

Thus the young wife saved her husband from the clutches of death. Since then this day of Dhanteras came to be known as the day of "YAMADEEPDAAN" and lamps are kept burning throughout the night in reverential adoration to Yam, the god of Death.

The SECOND day is called NARKA-CHATURDASHI or CHOTI DIWAL which falls on the fourteenth day of the month of Kartik. The story goes that the demon king Narakasur ruler of Pragjyotishpur ( a province to the South of Nepal) after defeating Lord Indra had snatched away the magnificent earrings of Aditi, the Mother Goddess and imprisoned sixteen thousand daughters of the gods and saints in his harem. On the day previous to Narakachaturdashi, Lord Krishna killed the demon and liberated the imprisoned damsels and also recovered those precious earrings of Aditi. As a symbol of that victory Lord Krishna smeared his forehead with the demon king's blood. Krishna returned home in the very early morning of the Narakachaturdashi day. The womenfolk massaged scented oil to his body and gave him a good bath to wash away the filth from his body. Since then the custom of taking bath before sunrise on this day has become a traditional practice specially in Maharashtra.

In South India that victory of the divine over the mundane is celebrated in a very peculiar way. People wake up before sunrise prepare blood by mixing Kumkum in oil and after breaking a bitter fruit that represents the head of the demon King that was smashed by Krishna, apply that mixture on their foreheads. Then they have an oil bath using sandalwood paste.

In Maharashtra also, traditional early baths with oil and "Uptan" (paste) of gram flour and fragrant powders are a `must'. All through the ritual of baths, deafening sounds of crackers and fireworks are there in order that the children enjoy bathing. Afterwards steamed vermiceli with milk and sugar or puffed rice with curd is served.
Another legend is about King Bali of the nether world mighty power had become a threat to the gods. In order to curb his powers Lord Vishnu in the guise of a Batu Waman- a small boy- visited him and begged him to give him only that much land which he could cover with his three steps. Known for his philanthropy King Bali proudly granted him his wish. That very moment that small boy transformed himself into the all-powerful Lord Vishnu. With his first step Lord Vishnu covered the entire heaven and with the second step the earth and asked Bali where to keep his third step. Bali offered his head. Putting his foot on his head Vishnu pushed him down to the underworld. At the same time for his generosity Lord Vishnu gave him the lamp of knowledge and allowed him to return to earth once a year to light millions of lamps to dispel the darkness and ignorance and spread the radiance of love and wisdom.
This Narakachaturdashi day therefore is dedicated to lights and prayers heralding a future full of joy and laughter.

The THIRD day of the festival of Diwali is the most important day of LAKSHMI-PUJA which is entirely devoted to the propitiation of Goddess Lakshmi. This day is also known by the name of "CHOPADA-PUJA". On this very day sun enters his second course and passes Libra which is represented by the balance or scale. Hence, this design of Libra is believed to have suggested the balancing of account books and their closing. Despite the fact that this day falls on an amavasya day it is regarded as the most auspicious.
The day of Lakshmi-Puja falls on the dark night of Amavasya. The strains of joyous sounds of bells and drums float from the temples as man is invoking Goddess Lakshmi in a wondrous holy "pouring-in" of his heart. All of a sudden that impenetrable darkness is pierced by innumerable rays of light for just a moment and the next moment a blaze of light descends down to earth from heaven as golden-footed Deep-Lakshmi alights on earth in all her celestial glory amidst chantings of Vedic hymns. A living luminance of Universal Motherhood envelopes the entire world in that blessed moment of fulfillment of a long-awaited dream of the mortal. A sublime light of knowledge dawns upon humanity and devotion of man finally conquers ignorance. This self enlightenment is expressed through the twinkling lamps that illuminate the palaces of the wealthy as well as the lowly abodes of the poor. It is believed that on this day Lakshmi walks through the green fields and loiters through the bye-lanes and
showers her blessings on man for plenty and prosperity. When the sun sets in the evening and ceremonial worship is finished all the home-made sweets are offered to the goddess as "NAIVEDYA" and distributed as "PRASAD". Feasts are arranged and gifts are exchanged on this day gaily dressed men, women and children go to temples and fairs, visit friends and relatives. Everything is gay, gold and glitter!

One of the most curious customs which characterises this festival of Diwali is the indulgence of gambling, specially on a large scale in North India. It is believed that goddess Parvati played dice with her husband, Lord Shiv on this day and she decreed that whosoever gambled on Diwali night would prosper throughout the ensuring year. This tradition of playing cards- flush and rummy with stakes on this particular day continues even to-day.

On this auspicious day Lord Shri Krishna around whom revolved the entire story of our great epic Mahabharat and the philosopher, who preached Karmayog through his Geeta to Arjun on the battlefield of Kurukshetra, discarded his body.
Bhagwan, Mahavir, the Jain prophet also attained "Nirvan" on this day.
Swami Ramtirth, the beloved "Ram Badshah" of millions of Indians was not only born on this day and took "Sanyas" but also took "Samadhi" on this day.
Swami Dayanand Saraswati, founder of Arya Samaj in 1875 in Mumbai, with his superb yogic powers greed his soul from his body and mingled with divinity on this auspicious day of Diwali.

We kindle innumerable lights on this day to immortalise the sacred memories of those great men who lived to brighten the lives of millions of their fellow beings.
One very interesting story about this Diwali day is from Kathopanishad of a small boy called Nichiketa who believed that Yam, the god of Death was as black as the dark night of amavasya. But when he met Yam in person he was puzzled seeing Yam's calm countenance and dignified stature. Yam explained to Nichiketa on this Diwali day of amavasya that by only passing through the darkness of death, man sees the light of highest wisdom and then only his soul can escape from the bondage of his mortal frame to mingle with the Supreme Power without whose will not an at ton moves in the world. And then Nichiketa realised the importance of worldly life and significance of death. Nichiketa's all doubts were set at rest and he whole-heartedly participated in Diwali celebrations.

The FOURTH day is PADWA or VARSHAPRATIPADA which marks the coronation of King Vikramaditya and Vikaram-Samvat was started from this Padwa day.
Govardhan-Puja is also performed in the North on this day. As per Vishnu-Puran the people of Gokul used to celebrate a festival in honour of Lord Indira and worshipped him after the end of every monsoon season but one particular year the young Krishna stopped them from offering prayers to Lord Indra who in terrific anger sent a deluge to submerge Gokul. But Krishna saved his Gokul by lifting up the Govardhan mountain and holding it over the people as an umbrella.
Govardhan is a small hillock in Braj, near Mathura and on this day of Diwali people of Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar build cowdung, hillocks, decorate them with flowers and then worship them.
This day is also observed as Annakoot meaning mountain of food. In temples specially in Mathura and Nathadwara, the deities are given milkbath, dressed in shining attires with ornaments of dazzling diamonds, pearls, rubies and other precious stones. After the prayers and traditional worship innumerable varieties of delicious sweets are ceremoniously raised in the form of a mountain before the deities as "Bhog" and then the devotees approach the Mountain of Food and take Prasad from it.
Goddess Lakshmi is worshipped in every Hindu household and her blessings sought for success and happiness. This day is looked upon as the most auspicious day to start any new venture. In many Hindu homes it is a custom for the wife to put the red tilak on the forehead of her husband, garland him and do his "Aarathi" with a prayer for his long life. In appreciation of all the tender care that the wife showers on him, the husband gives her a costly gift. This Gudi Padwa is symbolic of love and devotion between the wife and husband. On this day newly-married daughters with their husbands are invited for special meals and given presents. In olden days brothers went to fetch their sisters from their in-laws home for this important day.

The FIFTH and final day of Diwali Festival is known by the name of "BHAYYA-DUJ" in the Hindi-speaking belt "BHAV-BIJ" in the Marathi-speaking communities and in Nepal by the name of "BHAI-TIKA". As the legend goes Yamraj, the God of Death visited his sister Yami on this particular day. She put the auspicious tilak on his forehead, garlanded him and led him with special dishes and both of them together ate the sweets, talked and enjoyed themselves to their heart's content, while parting Yamraj gave her a special gift as a token of his love and in return Yami also gave him a lovely gift which she had made with her own hands. That day Yamraj announced that anyone who receives tilak from his sister will never be thrown. That is why this day of Bhayyaduj is also known by the name of "YAMA-DWITIYA" Since then this day is being observed as a symbol of love between sisters and brothers. It became also imperative for the brother to go to his sister's house to celebrate Bhayyaduj.

In today's world when pressing everyday problems are teaming as under all the tender words of personal relationships, the celebrating of this day has its own importance in continuing to maintain the love between brothers and sisters for it is the day of food-sharing, gift-giving and reaching out to the inner most depths of the hearts.
Diwali on the whole has always been the festival with more social than religious connotations. It is a personal, people-oriented festival when enmities are forgotten, families and friends meet, enjoy and establish a word of closeness.
As a festival of light and beauty it encourages artistic expressions through home-decorations stage-plays, elocution competitions singing and dancing programmes, making gift items and making delectable sweets thereby discovering new talents of younger people. As a result innumerable communities with varying cultures and customs mingle together to make Diwali celebrations a very happy occasion for all.

Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore has so aptly put forth the true significance of Diwali in these beautiful lines:"The night is black.... kindle the lamp of LOVE With thy life and devotion".

Best Wishes,
Jaideep Singh Bhati

Rupa Ji,

Ab bhaiyya jo galti karega maafi to use hi na maagni padegi. chahe koi usase maafi maange aur chahe na maange. Ab ee aap ka  samman haue ki aap mafi nahi maang rahi han. Aur janha pyar ki umeed ho to unha pyar ta milbai karega na aur pyar bhi bina maange milega. kahe ki jitna bachcha log achcha kaam karenge utna hi pyar haman ke de ee ke padi.

PS: All my strong posting regarding brain drain has a point. And that point is " to make rajput samaj progressive and prosperous". With all my experiences in India and US, I have come to a conclusion that the only way we can be prosperous without resorting to corruption and corrupt practices is to work hard and smart, and show your talent and earn good money. Get good education in all aspect of life. Get educated in science, medicine or engineering. Rajputs can do this in a better way in US or UK or other developed countries. This brain drain crap comes in their way of acheiving that.  Rajputs, being patriotic to the core,  are easily swayed by such themes and will be unable to utilized tremendous opportunities in these countries where as other samaj will avail them and prosper.  I myself had decided to go back to India out of the same feeling of patriotism and had to return to US after wasting three years and lot of enthusiasm in India. Hence I will not advise any of my brothers to
wast opportunities in the name of this crap. Its not that I am less patriotic but I am definitely more realistic than I was 8-9 years ago.

Rupa Ji,

I meant delhi get together and instead of "g" some how typed "d". I am sorry about that. Coming back to brain drain, I will still prefer to discuss delhi get together because it is one activity which is going to foster brotherhood and closeness among rajputs and a portion of samaj will benefit from this activity in one or otherway and i strongly support and endorse this get together.

So we have come to full circle again with this brain drain crap. It was a very fancy word in 70s with lot of fuss written about this. Then periodically it will be discussed in every decades and now in 2004. People, come on it is better to discuss Rupa Ji's dgt than this crap. Because, in india no brain is brain unless it is drained (accepted in US or UK etc.) and then all the hoopla of brain drain. This has become people's past time and a dustbin to take sheltar for all their failures. Otherwise who in God's India care about any brain by the way. You are rejected, denied, ridiculed, treated like dirty linen and finally discarded by the naukarshahs and political bosses. Even scientific managers will not respect a Ph. D. more than their chaprasis in govt. sectors. But once you get out, these very idiots will make you brain. Take it from me, India has never respected its brain and will never be able to stop this drain. Remember my words twenty years after and when we will still be
discussing this crap. In india a thanedar is more respected in society than Ph.Ds and professors. Such society will never be able to retain these brains.

Sorry for pessimistic outlook but this is hundred percent truth.

Indians also have become rich. I personally know 5-6
people who passed out of the college, caught eyes of
venture capitalists, estabilished small BPO units, got
lot of money and gave tremendous employment
opportunities. It was virtually impossible few years
back for a non techie graduate to think about a job
fetching them 15-20k per month in india. Now it is a
dream come true.

India could have cashed this on politiccally but this
has turned out to be a fiasco and the govt. has to beg
for H1 visas. This is a complete failure at policitcal
front. Americans lost more jobs in engineering sector
to Chinese and Japanese than in serivce sector to
India but still in US India is considered as bigger
threat.

I intitially thought that outsourcing is diminishing
enterprenureship in India to a great extent but now I
feel I have been wrong. When giants like Dell and AT&T
have opened there own BPO units in India, several
Indias have also emerged successfully in this
industry.

The benefit has been mutual. Had this outsourcing wave
not rippled, we would still be hainvg engineers
striving to get a 5k job after passing out of the
college.

Dear Rupesh,

Welcome back in the group. It was nice to read your view point on brain drain. You have asked solution to this problem. In my opinion, the very solution lies in nurturing brains in India itself and stop worrying about the brains that left India. If you take the example of Germany and US that you had mentioned in your letter,  US benefitted immensely from the immigrating scientists, no doubt about that, but if you look closely, Germany never became bankrupt of scientists. They relied on what was left in the country and rebuild a war ravaged and plummetted country into self reliant highly developed nation who's technology is still respected all over the globe. German technology and knowledge is not inferior to any country including US, not an inch of it. Infact they produce some of the finest cars and machines on planet earth, and Germany never cried of brain drain unlike India. That is the key difference, in my opinion, between India and other countries like Germany and Japan. The se
countries rose like phoenix and regained their technological competence inspite of being  completely destroyed in two world wars and inspite of being brain drained. They achieved such competence inspite of massive brain drain from these countries to US, and they could do it because they knew the importance of nurturing the brains available in the country and not crying and taking sheltor that some of the best brains have left. And thats why they can not progress. Taking such an stance is defitist in itself and all these countries knew it.

Sorry about spelling mistakes if you found any as I am in little hurry.

Its great to see so many views on "Brain Drain OF India". I had read all the points and do believe in many.. so what can be the solution to the problem existing. Any solutions..

There is a huge only one letter difference in between Brain and Drain(i.e. B and D)  but it means a lot I have a simple observation from the history..

During First World War and Second World War( a very important phase in world history) there was  lot of transition which was happening in the world demographic scenario then germany was a very important destination for all the scientific and research activities.. germany had many famous scientist in many fields mostly jews .. but due to changing atmosphere in germany almost all left germany and went to US, where in US they were welcomed with all respect and joy these young and old people who came in US from many quarters of europe in search of security,  later build US to a great country(this very phase made US into a leading country)..

Now this is the best example of brain drain--- US welcomed all of them, supported and encouraged them I feel the responsibility with which the government and society played is very important they nurished them and so in return gained from them now most of them are in the main stream line   .The US govt and US society had adapted and thats the reason for there success.

STILL it's happening if i pinpoint in a particular country(US) and now the shift is all across from the globe.

Brain is an important criteria which makes and diffrentiate an individual, a society, and at large a country.

What is serious issue is that we should never forget our roots and should always try to put our mother land first its true that country is supporting you in all aspects but u owe more to our  motherland than anything else, and can never come out from this. when this forgetfullness ingulfs you, the cost is that you neglect ur  mother land and its betterment by being selfish and opportunist.

Resp. Yogendrasinhji and others,Jaimataji!

Kindly consider the following points in reply to ur Q:

1. As far as I know; Alexandria, Verginia is hardly 10kms from the capital
city of Washington D.C. So its better as we would not have to travel for two
more hours [in addition to 18 hrs long flight from India and around 10hrs
from London] after landing at Newark Airport in case we decide for N.J.

2. Two airports in D.C area are equally good as the two airports of the twin
cities of Newark and NYC.

3. In general, Capital city is better known here in India, so we expect
better zest and participation from the samaj.

4. Alexandria is also a very historical place, and in addition to this we
have the benefit of touring the capital city of USA.  I suppose everybody
would like to see “The White House” among other attractions.

5. Whatever little difference [$4] in hotel cost between D.C Hilton or N.J
Hilton can be nullified as we can save some $s as distance of 10kms would
definitely cost us less as compared to two hrs journey to Brounswik in N.J.

6.We should also invite the Indian Ambassador to USA in the conference.I
faced this Q from many distinguished people here in India after the London
RIC.This would be possible if we go for the capital city of WDC.

7.In Addtion to the Indian Ambassador we should also try to invite some
Senators to the RIC,as RSUK did by inviting Ms.Barbara Roach and Mr.Stephen
Twigg. This again is only possible if we go for WDC.
Kindly let me know what do u think about the above mentioned points.

 Best wishes,

For that reason only I wrote in my previous posting clearly that brain drain of India, infra structure development and role of Government - these all things are nothing more than hypocrites and no clear reality lies with in it. even I will go up to extent that roots of present Indian brain goes simply because of collective effort all those migrated since early '60 onwards and government was no were in picture. Rupa Ji, I meant delhi get together and instead of "g" some how typed "d". I am sorry about that. Coming back to brain drain, I will still prefer to discuss delhi get together because it is one activity which is going to foster brotherhood and closeness among rajputs and a portion of samaj will benefit from this activity in one or otherway and i strongly support and endorse this get together.

To stop brain drain entire society will have to change its perspective and thinking and start identifying brains, and nurturing, respecting and utilizing them in a rightway.  Then only people, samaj and nation will benefit. We have tons of brain in 1 billion people and there will never be dearth of brains in India but there has always been problem of nurturing brains in India by IAS, and politicians. And society by large is responsible for this. I remember I wrote once that inspite of complaining of brain drain, Indian society should nurture what is left in India because those brains are still no less sharper than any one who has left India and can do wonders. Take my example, I am only one in US from my undergraduate batch of 55 students. I know at least 20 of them were no less intellegent than me and 19 are still in india living frustrated, dejected and confused because there brains are still "un or under-utilized". No body is talking about them and about those dismal circumstances
responsible for rotting those 19 brains from just one batch. Do your math and you will know how many brains in India go un-noticed, un-cared and disrespected. And we are wasting our time in glorifying 1-2 percent who left India. I know for sure if stayed in India I must have been rotting in some laboratory with dismal performance because I did go back to India from USA to share, care and perform to help uplift littlebit and left again fully convinved that India really needs to take care of those who are no less qualified and intellegent than those who have left India. Atleast in US or UK we are the Indian flag bearer and people have respect for India because of the brains that drained to these country. I think this is better use of such brains than to let them rot in India.

Sorry for pessimistic outlook but this is hundred percent truth.

people who passed out of the college, caught eyes of
venture capitalists, estabilished small BPO units, got
lot of money and gave tremendous employment
opportunities. It was virtually impossible few years
back for a non techie graduate to think about a job
fetching them 15-20k per month in india. Now it is a
dream come true.

India could have cashed this on politiccally but this
has turned out to be a fiasco and the govt. has to beg
for H1 visas. This is a complete failure at policitcal
front. Americans lost more jobs in engineering sector
to Chinese and Japanese than in serivce sector to
India but still in US India is considered as bigger
threat.

I intitially thought that outsourcing is diminishing
enterprenureship in India to a great extent but now I
feel I have been wrong. When giants like Dell and AT&T
have opened there own BPO units in India, several
Indias have also emerged successfully in this
industry.

The benefit has been mutual. Had this outsourcing wave
not rippled, we would still be hainvg engineers
striving to get a 5k job after passing out of the
college.

Thanks,

Dear Mr. Neerav,

Is it possible to hold the next RIC in India? That'll ensure larger participation.

Well, that is my personal opinion.

Indias have also emerged successfully in this
industry.

The benefit has been mutual. Had this outsourcing wave
not rippled, we would still be hainvg engineers

It is not only white man whose accounts are flooding
with inflows of money. In this BPO wave so many
Indians also have become rich. I personally know 5-6
people who passed out of the college, caught eyes of
venture capitalists, estabilished small BPO units, got
lot of money and gave tremendous employment
opportunities. It was virtually impossible few years
back for a non techie graduate to think about a job
fetching them 15-20k per month in india. Now it is a
dream come true.

India could have cashed this on politiccally but this
has turned out to be a fiasco and the govt. has to beg
for H1 visas. This is a complete failure at policitcal
front. Americans lost more jobs in engineering sector
to Chinese and Japanese than in serivce sector to
India but still in US India is considered as bigger
threat.

I intitially thought that outsourcing is diminishing
enterprenureship in India to a great extent but now I
feel I have been wrong. When giants like Dell and AT&T
have opened there own BPO units in India, several
Indias have also emerged successfully in this
industry.

The benefit has been mutual. Had this outsourcing wave
not rippled, we would still be hainvg engineers

Thanks,

It is evident that the brain drain is happening but the Govt/Indians
has failed to Capitalise on that fully.

It is told that nearly 35% of Indians employed manage the American
Industry (Microsoft, Intel AT&T etc), but the Winner is the White
Man since the product designed by us Indians are profited by the
whitemans bank account. The Indian Govt in the process has nothing
but helped the white man and could create a few Entrepreneurs like
TCS, Infosys(Narayanamurthy), Wipro(Azim Premji) and Satyam instead
of the whole nation benefitting from the software boom. Like China
dictates the terms when trading with America while we beg.

To set right we have to get into the Political system, otherwise we
will keep on making infrastructure/decisions which were needed fifty
years before.

One can have a look at some good work being done in India by Indians
at http://www.goodnewsindia.com/homepage.php

Rupaba,

I Beg to differ and I don't think that brain drain is
a problem at the first place. I would rather defend
this concept as I belive that it is the appropriate
use of the brain. I have following points to make. I
would try to cover all the points you have put.

1). The BPO term is currently used for call centers
and hardly 1% of those 78% engineers are joining call
centers. If they are joining, that is because they do
not have suitable jobs. And when they can find
suitable jobs abroad, why should we want them to stay
back and struggle to live when then can bring
prosperity to their dependents by working abroad.

2).India has superflous engineers in its core sector.
All of the PSUs, which are more vulnerable to any such
scarecity, are over staffed. There is almost
absolutely zero work done on research and development
in India. Why should we want a brain to stay home and
work in manufacuring industry where he has to apply
minimal brain power to get the things going. As far as
I think, brain-drain term is relevant only if the
brain is being judiciously utilized. If India doesnt
have capability to use this brain, the brains should
go out and help India externally.

3). Recently I have been to M.I.T in Boston, and I
found that Indian alumni has made an organization for
develpment of India. The point I am trying to make is,
that the brains who go out can still work for the
betterment of the country in a more effective way than
they can while staying in country. If they try to work
in india, they do not get enough funds, they do not
get required guidance and moral boosting and they do
not get firm platform for their research.

4). Report says that india loses 2 billion a year. And
the report doesnt say what amount is remitted to India
by these engineers. I am more than confident that it
would be more than that loss (UNDP report also says
that the traffic is not one way).

5). $15000 - $20000 is the total amount govt might be
incurring in educating the engineers who are going
out. They are capable or remitting this amount to
India in less than a year. This brings prosparity in
the country and leads to improved living conditions.

6). Ofcource s/w professional are enhancing the
countries reputation. India is no more considered as
land of Snake Charmers and Rope trickers. India is now
considered as land of clever and capable people. I
hear this evrey now and then in my office from
Americans. Some simpley admire and some are concerned
about losing their jobs. But they realize that that
have been outsmarted in their own game.

7). So many brains who went out side invested in India
and provided lot of employment opportunities in India.
Bharat Desai, CEO of Syntel India Ltd (My previous
company), which employs about 5000 people in india is
such example.

8). These brains are bringing us name, fame and
fortune. They have started to think more about their
motherland and infuencing thousand of those back home.
The attitude problem that India faces is slowly
changing. I owe it all to so called BRAIN DRAIN. I
find it more of a boon than a curse.

Please feel free to comment/opposse on any of the
points I have made above.

Thanks,
Bharat

Dear all,
I don't know weather I am here in subject thread of brain drain of India or infra structure development and role of Government. Actually still it is early stage to criticize or prize IT boom from nation's view point.  Still these e-commerce, e-market and e-government, etc., are still at its infant stage and well long way to go. Say today's 200 billion dollars e-commerce will reach more than 1 Trillion dollars in another 10 years and so definitely and so all these Indian brains have good job market value even in coming years. Now for long term policy for nation's view point actually government should come out with more and more promotional measure to drain back excessive fund available with all these NRI to be utilized in development project which up to some extent already there. Say for example ex IITians in Silicone valley are all well active in keeping touch with their almamater and many have helped in diverting fund to these institution millions of dollars only because they st ill think they owe to their almamater and so to their country. Do you know that IIM Ahmedabad or IIT Khargpur / Powai earn millions of dollars via these ex student?
It is true mouse and key board can not generate industrial production or GDP directly but can divert fund definitely. Still some country is playing safe concentrating more on industrial and GDP development than IT say China and many far eastern countries. Economy and situation in Bangkok or Manila no way different than our metros like Bombay or Delhi. All most every thing say population and so conj station, poverty, slums, corruption, law and order, etc are all most same like our metros still they are ahead in infra structures like Roads, Flyover, Metro rail etc. still in Bombay (after so many flyover in previous Shiv Sena BJP government) it takes more than 30 minutes to travel 20 km distance say from Bandra to Nariman point. Our leaders in Bombay or Delhi could have solved traffic problems if acted in similar manner in so many years as like in Bangkok or Tokyo. Just compare growth of all these international cities in last 40 years with that of our Metros.

Fund does not matter all the time if there is honest and strong leadership.

Thanks Regards and Jai Mataji

nice to hear something serious from your side after so much discussions on delhi gettogether.brain drain has been plaguing india for quite some time , which has increased many time in subsequent years.but the problem is not only og people but government also. seriouly speaking government itself is bent upon meking workforce for these foreign countries. answer onething,in day to day life which is needed more a computer engineer or a civil engineer.obviouly in india we need civil, mechanical, metallurgy engineers more in order to have development in india. major project remain incomplete because of lack of good civil engineers who can design good and cheap ideas for making of roads, railway. why is it that we have only one konkan railway type rail line while foreign countries has thousand like this. why is that we have not got till now the concept of viable highways, undergroung railways like these foreign countries.

we had done enormous development in the field of software but nothing that can increase the amenities.see example of delhi, the now the government has tried to decrease traffic congestion in delhi, had it been many years before thare has not been such traffic congestion as we see now.(you will see by yourself when u came here )
so we need civil engineers in quite demand , but what the seen is much different.i tell you the seen in north western part of india i.e. punjab, haryana, hp,,j&k, chandigarh and i think same is prevelent in other parts.here the total number of students studying civil engineering is about 1/50th of those studying electronics and computer.so for one civil engineer we will have 50 computer and electronics engineer.so demand in north india is more of civil engineer because of rough terrain, but we are producing software engineer is negligible as there is few major software company in north western india, which is producing 20000 software engineers everyyear.so where will they go, obviuly some go to banglore (but only of reputed college) rest have no other mean other than go abroad, while whole northwestern india cry for amenities, lack of railway connection etc.punjab has highest number of people goin abroad, this is the reason why.
this is also due to lack of jobs here as most of the work with govt, in which corruption is in large scale.this has led to brain drain. it is duty of government to help stop brain drain by diversifying the vocation then just start opening colleges to please people. in andhra, karnataka, maharasta there are about 200-300 colleges producing about 3-4lakh students , but where are industries to take them. in these 2-3 lakh are just of one software , so where they will go then going abroad. govt should try to diversify industry by opening and promotong new sectors of food and agro processing, meta, oil sector and privatise more to open up jobs in different fields for people.so problem is in govt and not we, all need money to fend for themselves and in a country where future is so much insecure we need more money for not only us but for future generation.we only need to shift our misguided policy on right track.
hope it is enough for mine side.

Subject: [RajputWorld ] Ok now back on to serious discussion topic "Brain Drain Of India" pls respond with your views!!

Dear Group

Jay Mataji to all!

Can you ever imagine a country without engineers, scientists, doctors and other professionals? That is exactly what is happening in India.

According to latest media reports US and UK Corporations have caused the ultimate brain drain in India. Most of the talented students are running after dollar/pound driven outsourcing work from the US or UK, working and learning IT and/or call centre work. It is estimated 78% of Indian engineers from mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, Civil, Instrumentation, Chemical and Biomedical engineering leave their field after graduation and work for BPO companies like TCS, Wipro etc. If this is not brain drain then what is?

In the mean time India is facing acute shortage of talents in the fields of science, engineering and technology. On the other hand the US and UK engineers work on their own technical field and they shift the dirty but talent-needed IT work to countries like India.

India faces shortage of people for high-end industrial work that is based on research and development

A brain drain of highly-skilled professionals to well paid jobs in the first world costs Asia billions of dollars each year but the traffic is not all one way, a UN report found. The United Nations Development Programme's (UNDP) Human

Development Report 2001 estimates India loses $2 billion a year in resources because of the emigration of computer professionals to the United States alone. The report made no mention of Indian remittances home.

It said about 100,000 Indians were expected to emigrate each year after new visas were approved in the United States in October last, and the average total cost to India of educating each one of them was between $15,000 and $20,000.

But the report, to be released in Mexico city, Sydney and several other cities on Tuesday, also noted that "diasporas", such as Indian computer professionals in Silicon Valley in the United States, can enhance the country of origin's reputation.

"The success of the Indian diasporas in Silicon Valley... appears to be influencing how the world views India, by creating a sort of 'branding'," the report said. "Indian nationality for a software programmer sends a signal of quality just as a 'made in Japan' label signals first-class consumer electronics," it said. The new transactional demand for information technology specialists from India has led to a rapid expansion of suitable training at home, increasingly by the private sector. "In a global market, people with the right skills will naturally migrate to the high-tech, high-wage frontier, wherever it is," said UNDP adviser Nancy Birdsall. "But we do see signs that when countries create the right conditions -- including openness to new investment and new ideas -- they can recapture some of what they have lost. The Indians in Silicon Valley are an important part of Bangalore's success

For quite some time the Question of India's brain drain has been bugging me and I have had many discussions with colleagues in UK and friends too but have failed to accept that we Indians only run after pounds or dollars?!!

My personal feeling and understanding is that we as an human being thrive for the betterment in our lives specially better living conditions for our selves and our dear ones!! But now that our desire for the betterment for our selves is causing India's infrastructure a greater deal of money as well as is proving to be harmful to our country's progress as whole.

So my question to you is what can we do to improve this situation? Are their any solutions at all?!!

Look forward to your contribution to this discussion and pls no need to take it personally at all!! Just treat as food for thought thats all!!

5. What is black when you buy it, red when you use it, and gray when you throw it away?

6. Can you name three consecutive days without using the words Monday,Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, or Sunday?

7. This is an unusual paragraph. I'm curious how quickly you can find out what is so unusual about it? It looks so plain you would think nothing was wrong with it! In fact, nothing is wrong with it! It is unusual though.

Subject: [RajputWorld ] Information about Infosys Recruitment Process

Dear Mambers,
  Jai Mata Ji Ki.

I got some information about infosys recruitment
process. I would like to share it with you. It will be
helpful for those members who are doing B.E./B.Tech.
And would like to join infosys.

---------------------- INFOSYS Pattern
--------------------
Infosys test consists of 10 puzzles for 50 marks which
You have to
solve in 1 hr. Mostly you have to get at least 7 or 8
correct. Each
questions may carry different mark. Then a Basic
English test of 45
questions which you have to answer in 30 minutes. No
negative
marking. Mostly like GRE type.
Above all Infosys has also changed it's recruitment
process from Feb
2003. The good news is, once u clear the test u will
be placed as a
trainee for 1 year and then in a probation period of 3
months. No
Interview at all. Cool ... isn't it. After the
probation period u
will be absorbed as regular employee depending on
their requirement
and your performance.
Information from a mail
" The post is for "Software Engineer Trainee" A fixed
salary of Rs
15000/- p.m will be given to who ever get through the
test. There
won't be be any interview. A rigorous 3 1/2 months
training will be
given followed by tests, quizzes etc, if you get
thrrough this you
will have to continue for 1 full year as trainee after
which
depending upon your performance you will be absorbed
on regular basis
and if you fail after 3 1/2 months you will only be
given a
certificate that you have undergone a training under
Infosys. Results
will be intimated within 3 weeks of the test. "
Again ... the recruitment process might have changed
by the time you
read this. So better verify with reliable sources and
get confirmed.
As a policy, there has to be a gap of at least 9
months between any
two-selection processes with Infosys. So once you
appear for any
Infosys test/interview, you are not eligible for
appearing any of the
Infosys selection process in the next 9 months. If you
try to cheat
them, you will be caught while verifying your
certificates. So don't
masquerade.
Don't keep on sending your resumes to them. Apply once
and forget it
( unless your mail bounces back or u receive a failure
delivery ).
Your resume will be in their database and they will
definitely call
in the coming weeks. So wait for your turn.
The most suggested books for Infosys test are
Sakuntala Devi's puzzle books
George Summers book
Barrons GRE Guide ( section 6 in model test papers at
the end )
Usually the test will be intimated to u 10 days in
advance. So use
those 10 days to the fullest. Do workout the puzzles
in the book.  If
any of you got a job do share your experience with Us.

Friendly mails are welcome. But please don't send
resumes toUs. We
have put forth all the information that We knew about
Infosys.

ENGLISH TEST

Initially, before Feb 2003 they used  to ask an essay
type question
for 15 minutes (you will be given two topics and
choose any one). But
from February 22 2003, Infosys has changed it's test
pattern. Instead
of the essay type questions they had introduced a test
in Basic
English. You will be given 30 minutes to complete 45
objective
questions with choices. No negative marking. You need
to encircle the
right choice. Each question carries 1 mark. Better
answer all the
questions in this section.

A sample English test asked in April 2003 :1. Simple
Comprehension on
environmental pollution- followed by 3 questions on
the theme of the
comprehension, objective etc.
2. Some fill in the blanks for words and phrases.
3. Some two sentences were given, it was asked to
detect which one is
correct. Both the sentences were almost same only very
minor
differences relating misspelling of a word.
4. One word substitution like: (4 choices for each
question)
a). A man who excessively bothers about ones own
health is called -
hypochondriac
b). The scientific term used for genetically changes
resulting from
constant radiation is called -- mutation
5. Meaning of phrases like Status Quo pro, etc
6. A continuous passage segregated into several
sentences each having
a blank to be filled in from choice so that the entire
paragraph
sounds complete.
7. Grammatical Error detections
How To Apply
You can directly send resumes to : [email protected]

For freshers, it won't make any difference even if you
forward
through an employee or directly send to that mail ID.
Even if you
send resume to a person working in Infosys, they have
to forward to
the same mail ID.
And before sending resumes to Infosys HR mail-ID
([email protected]),
pleass note :
1. 10 th, Inter, Engineering percentages should be 75,
70 and 75
respectively.
2. Date of Birth must be after January 1 st, 1979 for
B.Tech
students.
3. You should not have taken the Infosys test or
interview in the
last 9 months.
4. Write Your Full Name, Date of Birth, 10 th, Inter,
Engineering
percentages at the top of resume clearly. They are
mandatory. If they
are not present, your resume will be DELETED
straight-away. In fact,
no other details are required in resume. Don't write
all nonsense
like " I am a synonym of hard work " etc.
5. Also NEVER write your percentages Semester wise or
Year-wise. Just
write the aggregate percentage. That's more than
sufficient. No one
is going to read your complete resume.
If you don't satisfy any of the above criteria, your
resumes will be
DELETED by the HR straight-away. So, no use of sending
them.  Also
note that : Even if you meet all these criteria, you
may NOT get the
call letter sometimes. You are not the only one
applying for the job.
When the number of resumes received are in lakhs, they
will give call
letters only to few thousands. It depends on your
LUCK. So, if don't
get call letter, either wait for some time or apply
for the next
test. There is no other option.
If you are less than 3 years experienced, send resumes
to:
[email protected]
If you are more than 3 years of experience, send
resume to one
working in Infosys. They will forward.
Even for experienced people all the above rules apply
(Except DATE OF
BIRTH rule) and the mentioned details are required in
resume.

With Regards
Jaideep Singh Bhati

Mangleshwar Ji,

You were really writing good english so keep it up. I know you are excellent in "Shudha Hindi" and express it better in that language but you will have to take sanyas from that language for time being. Pull of Hindi ( Hindi off course is one of the sweetest languages I have known, Matribhasha jo Thahari) is so great that you will have to put efforts not to use it for some time on this plateform. Keep expressing in English even if you feel it is difficult doing that. Because at that moment your vocabulary will grow and you will search for better words. So now you are not permitted to write in Hindi till you yourself is confident in English. After that we will welcome you and your Hindi. Moderators please help us.

Dear All, this is regarding the delhi gathering. I think we have
almost finalised the details of this rajput meet.Let me answer the
questions as asked specifically by Vijaysa.

VENUE- DELHI------ As suggested by Vandanaji, Meenaxiji and
Mangleshwarji we can start with a lunch at either Haldiram's or
Nirula which ever we finally settle for.

DATE- 2nd Jan.-05 (Sunday)

TIME- I would say we can meet at some place (say rajghat as suggested
before by someone) introduce ourselves, have a light chat and then
head for a predecided place for lunch and then as the day grows the
group can decide to do a lot of things like going for a movie or may
be appu ghar !!! So I would say typically the participating member
should be willing to spend the entire day with the group. But it
doesn't have to be that way necessarily. If anyone wants to leave
early he is more than welcome to do so.

CONTACT NO.- I will list the phone no.s of the participating members
and post a message on the group website. There is as such no
organiser for this meet everyone knows the details of the meet so you
can contact anyone. Let me request the participating members to send
me a personal message with their contact details. I will upload them
in a file on the group website.

FAMILY/FRIENDS- Of course......everybody is welcome !!!!! but, I
hope I am speaking on behalf of everyone, only rajputs should attend
this meet !!!!

COMMUTATION- As suggested by bharatsa if we have enough cars we don't
need to hire a cab. But I have no idea how many of the participating
members have cars. I don't have one. Again let me have you all
respond to the following question

Who among the participating members have cars and will they be
willing to drive around the group in delhi ??

If we cannot arrange for enough cars then of course we will hire a
cab.

untill later !!

Dear Jaydeepsinhji,

You need not go in hide or go inactive in message posting or no need even
for this much big "sorry". There is nothing big offense or crime committed
may be you hurriedly miscommunicated. I think your invitation for that
Shanksrsinghji Vagehela's group may for that Shakti Dal he has formed but
that is all old storey. It was during last parliamentary election he formed
it to counter RSS and Bajrang Dal and it is all choice of each individual to
be part or not. This cyber group is not connected with any particular party
or leader. It is all up to each individual member to decide whom they
support or whom to oppose. This is not political forum for any particular
party and so is open for all.

Dear Mahendra and all,

You always keep on taking 'punga' with one or other every time. We know that you have good intention some time behind it but not necessarily to dictate out your liking or disliking to others or using harsh language to show your anger. Go cool dear as per order of your Masiba ( !! ). let me go in balanced manner - thodi bahot mahendra ki bhi sun lo- and so just try to restrict whenever possible in posting Delhi get to gather matter and mail personally by cc to concern member and let some body say sujansa or some post it in one mail all accumulated briefing when require arise or at periodic interval. But don't spoil atmosphere on message board explaining each other pros and cons of posting.
Rupaba approach is always appreciable to keep group in balanced mood. We are not gathered here to discuss 24 hours serious matter and must have fun and light things too.

  Rupaba and All,

It will be MORE better if we all work for some community purpose
rather then trying to get fem or making ourselves popular and
popular.or just plyaing with others fellings as u tried in the below
mentioned mail. Myself is not interested to get any CERTIFICATE FROM
ANY BODY that i am 0% or 100% right or wrong.

I already get a very great certificate from Aloksa and agree with
that certificate that I m of the ficke nature,bullying/belighting
behaviour. I am really happy with this certificate and wants to
  remain this certificate for LIFETIME.

I thinks Me,you and some other members on the group needs some
self CENSORSHIP/restricion  while posting messeges on the group.

There was nothing anything hard I said to Jaideepsingh Bhati and
it was his mistake.he was no where in the picture still he wear the
cap just only on account of using 'I' instead of 'Y' while he had
clearly ignored the difference between the word sinh and singh so
there is nothing like that i had discouraged him !!!! Please dont try
to play wtih other's feeling in such manner.this kind of moves will
not help you to achieve your motive/goals.

Myself didn't interested in getting fem, praise or any designation
or whatever thing in our community so what our members/community
Membres thinks about me it doesn't affect me.nobody in the world can
change my FICKLE NATURE,BULLYING/BELIGHTING BEHAVIOUR !!!!

I hope that it will be the last posting in this thread.I mostly
interested only in something constructive and not anything else !!!
fun, enteratingment are ok sometimes but there must be some limit !!!

and in my original mail to Jaydeepsinhji Gohil I had praised him,
so there was nothing like downgrading/discouraging /misunderstanding
of our another esteem member Mr. Jaideepsingh Bhati of Jodhpur
