Listeners familiar with flaxen-haired pop starlet Christina Aguilera�s 1999 debut may be a little confused about her new record, Stripped. What happened to those scale-shredding vocal runs? Who is this Redman fellow and why is he barking at me? Where are her clothes? No, seriously, where are her clothes?
Never comfortable as a teen pop princess, Aguilera re-made herself for Stripped by taking a match to her squeaky-clean image and burning the girl-next-door�s house to the ground. The sugary pop sheen seems to have come out in the wash and in its place Aguilera slathers herself in some spicy Latin guitar (Infatuation), grubby confessional rock (Fighter) and saucy hip-hop (lead single Dirrty). The sleeve�s eye-popping yo-ho hello there! artwork and the sly Eminem-baiting rap on Can�t Hold Us Down will get most of the headlines, but the record�s biggest shock is how well the songs suit Aguilera�s powerful voice. Ably assisted by co-writer Linda Perry( pal of Aguilera�s Lady Marmalade cohort Pink), hip-hop hired guns Redman and Lil� Kim, plus an army of heavyweight producers, Aguilera has crafted a disc of adventurous, genre-hopping pop.
