When I awoke from my hopeful long-lasting sleep (it wasn't long enough), I slapped myself on the forehead and hoped the day would be short. Preferrably ending with me resting in peace in a long wooden box. A break would be nice.
"Rise and shine, your turn to cook breakfast," my large companion tells me. As if I was actually going to do it.
"Muzzle, did you catch breakfast," I asked, hoping he had. The last time I had to catch breakfast I almost lost my foot to the creature.
"No, I woke up a little late. Use your element gun to catch us some food."
"Rock, paper, scissors?"
"How about I shoot you in the foot to save breakfast the trouble?"
"I'm going, I'm going." Damn it!
"If you get enough meat for a stew, I'll give you two e-clips."
"That's a bet. Talk to you later."
If a man gets mauled in the woods, does anybody hear him? I try not to think about that. I walked around in the woods hoping I wouldn't run into something that could smash me into paste before I could let off a shot. When I found something... I wish I hadn't. It stared up at me with twelve big black eyes, and a tongue that touched the ground. It was scrawny, and had an exoskeleton,so I wasn't expecting any meat. It started licking my leg, and thankfully I was wearing armor so I didn't feel it, even though I could imagine what it felt like.
It seemed to be friendly and when I bent down to touch it...it actually let me touch it. That's amazing for a world like the one we live in. I started to wonder if it had other intentions, and it was just acting when I heard a wierd beeping noise. I looked around wondering what that noise was, when Muzzle came running up.
"Little man, we have a blip!" He said with more enthusiasm then I had ever seen in a person before.
"What does that mean?" I said, ignoring the creature licking my leg.
"It means that a gem is near by! Come on we have to search for it!"
"Why do we..." I was cut short when Muzzle grabbed me by the arm and drug me behind him. After about three hours of searching, we stopped for a rest.
"I'm not sure what it looks like, but it holds power. And to win the race we have to get as many as we can." He says with a sadistic look on his face.
"What's so big about it anyway?" I asked curiously. He grabbed me and threw me against the wall.
"These gems can give who ever holds them power, and if you gain enough of them you will get the weapons and armor that can lead to near ultimate power!" He screamed into my face.
"Oh, ok," was all I could say with the pain going through my head.
He picks me up and yells at me, "NOW, LET'S GET GOING!!!" and then he walks off.
I followed him, and wondered where that strange creature had gone. That's when I started hearing this choking sound coming from behind a bush. I waited for it to come closer to me but when it didn't and the sound didn't stop I went to the bush and looked over it. Speak of the devil! It's that wierd d-bee thing from earlier!
It looked up at me, and it looked painfully ill to the best of my knowledge (how do you tell on a creature with an exoskeleton?) and for some reason I feel a need to help it. I kneel down, and open it's mouth and I see something caught in it's throat. I can't see it very clearly so with one hand I hold the creatures upper jaw and try to get the object. Almost...almost...there! Got it! I pull it out as quickly as I can to keep from getting my arm bit off but there was no reason for it. The creature never budged. I pat it on the head and look at what it was choking on. It's a stone made of a precious mineral, kind of like...A GEM!!
"Muzzle!! Muzzle!! I found it!" I yelled enthusiastically. Maybe now he won't toss me around like a ragdoll. Muzzle runs over and sees me standing there with the creature at my feet, and a gem in my hand and his face lights up like the morning sky. He walks over to me holds out his hand to shake, and when I take his hand, he pulls me toward him and gives me a big hug.
"Let me see it." I hand it to him and he takes a look.
"It really is a gem!! It has the markings!" He shows the markings to me and I see a WP written on it in gold.
"Put it in your inventory and see what it is."
"Huh?"
"The little computer screen you got." I take my "inventory" out and...what the hell do I do now?
"Muzzle, what do I do now?"
"Put it in," he says with impatience.
"How do I do that?" He rips the inventory from my hand, and puts his hand into it.
"Like that." I take my inventory back and "put" the gem into it. My hand goes into and I pull it out and the screen changes to a view of the gem with writing next to it. It reads: "Green gem: Weapon of power. Gives holder of gem increased agility and speed."
"It really increases my speed and agility?" I asked innocently.
"Yep, if you keep it within five feet, it will."
"Sweet, I'll try it out." I pull it out of the inventory and throw it behind my back and catch it front of me without hardly even trying.
"Maybe this quest is worth going on afterall." After I say that Muzzle slaps me up side my head.
"I've been saying that all week!"
"Where to now?" Muzzle pulls out his inventory presses a couple buttons on the screen, and a map pops up showing several dots on the screen.
"What are those dots?"
"Those are the locations of other gems on Earth."
"How do you know all this stuff."
"You were late for the briefing, this is all the stuff you missed."
"Oh," I say stupidly.
"Use one of your teleporting chips to get near a gem."
"What about our new friend here?" I bend over and give it a pat on the head, and it starts drooling all over the ground.
"He'll have to wait here."
"Sorry but we have to go, but we'll be back soon." I don't know how but I feel like it understands.
I pull out one of my chips. "What now?"
"Just think of which gem location you want to go to. Go to this one here," he points out a spot in Northern Europe.
I think about that spot and suddenly I'm standing in a different forest.
"Whoa." I see Muzzle appear a few feet away, and go over to him.
"Now what?"
"We look."
"Simple enough." We start looking and looking, when we see a big bear sleeping in our path.
"I'm getting hungry Muzzle. Dinner?" I point towards the bear.
"I don't know...it may be something else," he says. I pull out my element gun and fire a shot.
"I don't think that was such a good idea."
I turn to him. "What makes you say that?" As I'm not looking the bear turns into a giant.
Muzzle points towards the giant. "That's what."
The giant yells, "WHO DARES SHOOT ME!!" I wish I could learn when to stop being me.
