Why Geosciences?
Have you ever wondered...
Where do mountains come from? How hot is it inside a volcano? Why is a diamond clear and emerald green? Is global
warming really a threat? If so, perhaps a career in Geosciences is for you.
Here are some examples of what geoscientists do.
Geoscientists study and help mitigate volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, floods, and landslides. Geoscientists discover and help develop groundwater supplies, construction materials, mineral ores, and fossil fuels. Geoscientists also explore new ideas about the natural world from the core of the Earth, to the the depths of the oceans, to the outer reaches of space.
Geoscientists study physical and chemical processes in order to understand the origin and distribution of resources.
Geoscientists also provide scientific counsel and advice on preserving the environment,
improving ecologically damaged
areas, and determining the environmental impact of land development.
Geoscientists work with people, data, information, ideas, and technology. They work in the field and in the laboratory. They gather and interpret data, generate ideas, Photoand communicate their results in writing, illustrations, and oral presentations. Geoscientists often work with other scientists and engineers in teams, reflecting the complexity of problems addressed.
