If you simplified North Country Radio's AM88 kit -- throw out the FM and CW modulation capabilities, only include the lowpass filter for 1200-1700 kHz, and replace the PLL with a much simpler crystal oscillator -- you'd get something similar to the following circuit, which has a much better CPOR ("Complexity to Power Output Ratio").
