"I'm Luke Skywalker, I'm here to rescue you!"

C-3PO and R2-D2: the real heroes of the Star Wars saga

few people have never seen any of the Star Wars films (or at least haven't seen them in a very long time). so I see no need to explain something as incredibly popular as Star Wars. but i will say that i'm not as much of a fan as i used to be. blame it on George Lucas' unnecessary alterations of the original, beloved films, and the mess he's made of the prequels. i'm not the only one who feels cheated because he won't release the original (i.e. 1977, 1980, and 1983) versions of the films on DVD.

Episode 2: Attack of the Words

well... it's been a few months since the release of Episode 2. i've only seen it twice (once in a good theater setup, the other time in a crappy theater setup). i'd like to go see it again in the IMAX theater... i hear it does the film justice with 20 minutes of footage cut out. but... I don't know. Spider-Man impressed me more than Episode 2 did, if you can believe that. the one superhero i have always loved is Spider-Man, but i never liked him more than i used to like Star Wars. what I mean by "impressed" is that overall the movie is great. even Spider-Man had some dialogue disasters (the scene between Peter and Mary Jane in the hospital). but overall the film was more enjoyable.

the dialogue of Episode 2 just plain sucks at some points. i may have an entirely different opinion a few months after watching the DVD. but right now just thinking about the film, the dialogue was the worst of any Star Wars film. it reminds me of some of the original dialogue intended for The Empire Strikes Back, later changed due to the recommendation (and rightfully so) of someone else involved with the film. it was for the scene in the carbon freezing chamber, when Han and Leia say goodbye to each other. originally Han practically gave a speech to Leia, but then someone suggested the simple and effective:

Leia: "I love you!"
Han: "I know."

thinking about Episode 2, there were many clunkers of verbiage present. the thing with Yoda, at the beginning, saying "Warms my heart it does to see you alive," to Padm. ugh! (though i have to say the scene with Yoda and the young Jedi kids was good.) and then Anakin "professing" his love for Padm... that scene after their dinner or whatever, when there's a fireplace in the background. some of the things he said were very good, but it could have been trimmed down and worded so much better than what they ended up using. last time i watched the DVD, i skipped almost all the Anankin/Padm scenes, and found the movie much more enjoyable. go figure.

in conclusion to this rant, i say this: i want to give these new films some time. Episode 3 will be out in three years. hopefully it will bring everything together and make the new films so much better than what they are. and... i hope, overall, that Episode 3 rivals even the old trilogy. It will (supposedly) be the last Star Wars film ever. let us hope it will be explosive, and not a bomb.
