Friends

Somewhere in the wonder of meeting
getting to know and like you
A bond developed that changed us both.

I don't remember how our talks
came to be about us or how we learned to touch
But in the course of our friendship, we did.

Remember the day at the beach
I took off my shoes and ran, happy, a little crazy
from the sound of the waves.
You stood and watched,
wondering about me.

I couldn't resist getting you just a little wet
so I splashed you and knowing I may be drowned,
ran with all my might.
You caught me, grabbed my arm, jerked me to a halt.
When I turned to face you, the hands and arms of my Friend
became those of a lover.

Kissing you,
I pulled away then laughed
at the serious look in your eyes
but it overcame us
and for awhile I pretended I was your lover
and listened to the ocean
 pounding, pounding
in my head.
