Three Passions

Three Passions in My Life-

Passion is that feeling of your throat closing as tears fill your eyes, blurring your vision. Passion is pain, love, tenderness, joy, sadness and loss. My passions are life, love and laughter. Passion is the sound of life. Life is music, a soundtrack interwoven that plays on and on. The rhythm begins in your mother's womb as cells join together and begin to beat. It plays throughout until the chorus winds down and the final note sounds. Life is a joyful song of innocence. A dance of freedom. A lullaby and a Christmas carol. The sound of children, trying loudly not to wake their parents on Christmas morning, of siblings in a verbal disagreement. The telephone ring, the school bell chime, a fire alarm, the sirens of emergency vehicles, a drum roll and the cry of a newborn. Happy Birthday, Auld Lang Syne, Pomp and Circumstance, The Wedding March. The rhythm as breath follows breath. A haunting melody of times gone by, of promises broken and tears shed. A soothing piece of love and healing and personal growth. The song winds down, the grand finale, a funeral dirge. The music stops.

Passion is love. Love is touch and feeling. Placing your hand on your child's fevered brow and feeling your mother's hand on yours, and your grandmother's hand on hers, and so on and so on. Touching your spouse's hand at the altar and feeling God weld your life and souls together. Love is spring fever, being twitterpaited, and spine tingling, toe curling sex. Touching your newborn for the first time. A child creeping into your bed in the darkness, and snuggling against you. Your lover's arms sliding around you and pulling you close. Ministering, healing hands on your body when you are very ill. A back rub easing away all the tension of a long day. Love is the touch of someone who shares your loss and grief, as you stand beside an open grave and contemplate an empty future.

Passion is laughter and laughter is freedom. Laughter is joy and wonder and the sweet healing power of humor. Laughter makes life bearable. It's looking at someone you know so well you have the same thought and burst out laughing. Adult innuendo in children's cartoons. A joke that breaks the ice or relieves the stress in a bad situation. Movies that make you laugh until you cry. A really great stand up comic. Freedom of knowing who you are and loving what you do. Being willing and able to express your own opinion. Being able to really laugh at yourself. Faith that there is a dawn after the darkness and that tomorrow will always be a better day.

I believe that a loving God made us passionate creatures. He gave us life and the ability to love, then gently poured laughter over it all.
