2000 - "The Midwest"

The next three shows saw me back on the road after a week of work.  Being back at work sucked.  Being back on the road ruled :)  I had conspicuously planned all the PJ stints so as to hit as many shows as possible, while missing as little work as possible.  Up until this leg, I had only burned a single day of vacation.  These next six shows would give me just over an entire week off...and believe you me did I live it up.

I had seen Tori at Deer Creek and just adored the venue...one of the best (potentially) sounding ampitheatres I've ever been too...

Seeing Pilate was a REAL treat!  I LOVED it that night--gave me goosebumps, literally.  "Like Pilate I have a dog, obeys, listens, kisses, luuuuuuuuuuuuuuvs."  I LOVE the way they dig down low for the "luvs".  tyaam?  OHMYFUCKINGODAREYOUKIDDINGME!!!!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?  If I had been asked, before the world tour, what was more likely, Crazy Mary, Garden, Pilate, Throw your Arms around me, Rockin in the Free World, Soldier of Love, Why Go?, Baba O'Reily, or Kids are Alright...I would have pretty much shit a brick at the very thought of seeing them play ONE!!!!! of those songs.  And then...all of them?  most of them more than once?  OHMYFUCKINGODAREYOUKIDDINGME!!!!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
I was in sheer bliss this night. end. of. story.

Did I mention that I just really Loooooooooove Deer Creek Ampitheatre?

I was genuinely surprised at how small and cozy this venue was...probably the smallest of the tour...at least it seemed that way.  Compared to the past few shows, this one seemed less *charged*.  More slow, relaxed songs and a little less speed volume to the whole thing.  Not in a *bad* way mind you...a little breather is always nice.  This show just didn't seem quite as steller though...one of the lesser shows this summer.  This night, however, the boys DID still pull some good shit out of their arse...The Kids are Alright being the most notable (even if ed did completely skip the first verse, the fucker).  Rival was a great addition to the set as well.  I know this night and this place rested heavily on at least Ed's mind...it being the city where the infamous Who tradegy occured...Eddie had conversed with PT on the subject following Roskilde, seeking advice and theropeutics from his idol...and eddie made reference to that on stage.  Makes me think the slower and more relaxed set was a result of the tragedy Mike includes some classic rock snippets in YL, as he would do much of the tour...this night was some van halen and some ted nugent.

After the show that night a bunch of us PJ DATters...and not to dis, one analoger from Alaska (!) would meet up at ones apt and drink and listen to DATS and shoot a lot of shit...As I said before...it's all the people you finally meet IRL after knowing them by email addies or handles that makes these kind of trips SO much more Awesome!

Of all people, I ran into the Stinson's at this show (Art, Maggie, and Shelly) while waiting in line for tickets with Bob...It's a small friggin PJ world!  The boys threw Nothingman out...i was thrilled to see an electric version finally...but it was nothing like seeing them do it at bridge in 1996...Other than that, this was kind of a ho hum show (as far as PJ goes that is).

After this show I opted to take off and go see Gettysburg rather than hang out with my road friends.  The battle site was on the way to Jones Beach and I didn't think I would ever get such a perfect chance again.  Standing there in the fields, orchards, little roundtop/big roundtop, and just exploring Everywhere...it gave me more perspective on fighting for what you believe in and conviction.  Knowing what men did there, what they died doing, and how they died doing it...Really grounded me.  I gained something there that day that superceded all the concerts and all the friends and everything else...

To Jones Beach!
