Sweetie is now ten years old and has just laid so many eggs in her lifetime. In talking to an Avian Vet this is not at all uncommon for a cockatiel. In doing so Sweetie depleted and rebuilt up her calcium so many times that it took it's toll on her ligaments and tendons. She no longer can fly or hold herself up on her legs. From what I have been told this is not uncommon either for persistent egg laying cockatiels. Sweetie therefore lives a much different life than she use too. She use to love to fly and did so each day when I let her out. Then she just loved to be on my shoulder and loved taking baths, which she still does enjoy. She was always a very good eater and still is. She was always very loving and people oriented, which she still is. To make her life as good as I can now she gets out most every day for exercise, bathing, and I have to preen her head for her of course. She loves to sit in my hand and get her scratches. She loves to sit on the back of the recliner for further preening and napping. I feel her life is still a good one and she is not in any pain. She still is very good at getting what she wants and I just do all I can for her to still have quality of life. She no longer can perch so she has a small cage with dishes that she can go from one to the other for eating and drinking. She is a very good eater still and really enjoys her favorite foods. She can get around also by using her feet and beak to climb up her cage. She continues to welcome us when we come home and bows her little head for loving. I will do whatever it takes to make her happy in her older age. |

I love to just sit in my Mama's hand. It's warm and safe, plus I can't hang on to her shoulder anymore so this works. Here I am watching the Daytona 500. I don't miss many Nascar Races, watched them my whole life. |

You did say I could fly now, didn't ya? I love to do this and Mama says it's so good for me to get exercise. I'll do this till I have to stop and catch my breath. I can do this pretty good still at my age and I love it. |

See my wings go? This is almost as good as flying, I just don't go any where. Guess it's kinda like people when they ride them bicycles that don't go any where. But, this is still pretty fun! |

I'm starting to slow down now! But, that was fun if I must say so and I'll get to do more flying tomorrow. Now I'm going to just sit here and cool off my under wing pits. |

This is where I preen, rest and watch television. I can also see lots of things out these big windows and someone will probably come by with some popcorn, a peanut or a drink of water. Mama knows after flying I get thirsty. I am a happy bird still and I just love my Mama and Daddy. |

My little "Sweetie" passed over the rainbow bridge on February 3rd 2003. My heart was broke. She died in about a minute, without suffering. I thank God for that and for her. She is truly going to be missed. I loved her dearly and thank Joanne for her. |
