How can peace be achieved? What does help look like? Where does it come from? How can one individual make a difference?
You can show your support for homosexuals in many ways. The following are helpful hints for positive interaction with queer students. How many do you consistently do already? Are there any that you can challenge yourself to begin doing regularily?
- Don't assume everyone is heterosexual.
- Listen to yourself. Are you using language that is inclusive?
- Avoid and confront antigay humor.
- Familiarize yourself with the queer community. Read books, listen to music, attent events, etc.
- Create a safe and welcoming environment. Let others know that you are available for others to talk to about the issue in an open way, display advertisements for upcoming events in the queer community.
- Educate others.
- Make yourself a resource for referrals. You might not know all the answers, but know where to direct individuals with questions and concerns.
- Join committees that address homosexual issues.
