my poet's thoughts on words that sound like bad words:

the association of "bad" with words intensifies the trauma of knowing the word.
a child knows the word
and must do something
with this information.
expression of these words,
transformation or reclaimation
of their meanings
and identifiers
is safest in the form
of creative writing
or spoken/dramatic forums.
especially when facilitated well
to bring out the dormant flowers...

Therefore, again,
these associations can be analyzed,
reflected upon,
used as emotive therapy triggers
and released through artistic techniques.

Activity (ages 15 and up)

Make a list of all the bad words you know.
Cross out the ones you don't ever use.
On the other side of the page
name one or two word reasons
why you don't use these words.
Discuss with small groups
why people do use "bad words".
Make up some alternative "swear"
words that might be used when
people are frustrated.
Share your feelings
about overhearing use
of offensive language.
Share what you like
about using "bad words"
and what are some of the consequences
of using "bad words"?
How have words been used to control you?

Please do this activity with a trained facilitator.
