The fate of the Western world rests in the hands of an American history professor, Jack Ryan living in England, while he researches a book. Having recently displayed his talent for dealing with fanatics, namely a particularly militant wing of the IRA, Ryan is hired by CIA DDI Vice Admiral James Greer as a part-time analyst. He figures he can juggle all his projects, but soon finds himself debriefing a Soviet defector, and learns that the Soviet Union plans to assassinate Pope John Paul II. Ryan has to first confirm that the plot is true, and then prevent it. The novice agent gets a crash course in comples Cold War politics, as he sets out to do his job... Every step he takes in the dicey world of US/ Soviet relations has the makings of catastrophe. When all's said and done, its not just the life of the Pope, but the fate of the entire Western World that hangs in the balance. |
