<Part 1>

Spike was having a bad day. No, scratch that, he was having the worst day in his unlife! //Of all the bloody demons ta run into I run into a Fradglarn. An' one making with the mojo too. Shit!// "Meow."

The vampire tried to swear again. "Mrrrow!"

//A fuckin' kitten! 'e couldn't 'ave turned me inta a lion or a wild tiger or somthin', no. He turned me into a kitten!// "Grrrrrowl." //Can't even growl right. My fuckin' balls 'aven't even dropped yet! Bloody 'ell!//

"Look mommy a kitty cat!" A chocolate covered hand tried to grab him. Spike lashed out and purred when he drew blood.

//No chip though.// He gave a kitty cat grin while the boy cried and disappeared into the crowd. //And sunlight isn't 'urtin' me. 'ey! Watch those boots!// "Mrrrowl! Hissssss!"

    "Mangy cat!"

//'m not mangy.// He pouted and looked around. Where the hell was he anyway? //The magic box! Maybe the slayers minions c'n 'elp!// He waited for someone to walk in and slipped through the door.

"Giles I understand that knowledge is a good and powerful tool but what does trigonometry have to do with anything if you aren't going into mathematics or advanced astro science?"

    "It doesn't."

Willow pouted at the evil trig textbook. "So why do I have to take this class again?"

"Because you would like to graduate."

    "Oh."

Buffy smirked, "And because there's a cute blond someone in the same class?"

Tara blushed and buried her nose in her books while all three of them giggled.

Giles smiled at his children and shook his head before moving toward the door to the basement, "Xander, would you like  something to drink?"

"Sure, I'll be up in a sec G-man, just let me finish coating this last shelf so it can dry.

"Why do you insist on calling me that?" The watcher  grimaced at the unwelcome pet name.

"Because even from way down here I can see you making the 'why me' watcher face."

This was met by the exact expression and fresh laughter from the girls.

Before Giles could reply he felt a slight tug on his trouser leg and looked down into a furry platinum face with big blue eyes. "Hello, what's this?"  He lifted the kitten and smiled, "How did you get in here?"

//Oi! watcher! 'elp me out 'ere!// "Mrrow! Mew! Meow Rowrr!" //Shit.//

    Giles smiled and petted him.

//Well if yer not gonna 'elp let me go!//

    "Ouch!"

    Willow looked up sharply. "Giles?"

"It bit me." He looked at the ball of fur sullenly.

    //Yer own fault!//

It was that moment Xander chose to come into the room, He was covered in the smell of fresh cut wood and clear coat. "It's your own fault."

Spike looked up at Xander and mewed in agreement. //There, he says so too.//

The watcher looked at Xander in annoyed curiosity, "I beg your pardon?"

He smiled and Spike perked up his ears and moved closer, but stayed out of reach for the time being.

"Kittens are scared of new people. You held him on his back and scratched his belly. It made him feel subdued and threatened. You can only do that if they trust you."

"You know the oddest things at the most interesting times."

    "I had a cat once."

    "Had?"

He nodded and smiled again but it was more forced. "So I know how to take care of them."

Willow looked at the kitten and smiled softly. "It's so cute!" She held her hand out and waited for the kitten to sniff it.

Spike glared. //'m not cute!// "Mrrowl!" His ears twitched again as Xander started to laugh.

"I think he. . ." The boy snickered, "He doesn't like being called cute."

//Right then I'm sticking with the whelp. 'e speaks kitten 'e does.// Spike climbed into Xander's lap and the boy stroked his back and held lightly making him curl up and purr louder.

Giles shook his head, "Amazing." He looked around, "Who's do you think it is?"

Xander shrugged, "It doesn't have a collar."

Willow picked up the paper, "People write in here if they lose a  pet, we'll just take care of it until someone misses it."

"Xander." Giles looked at him in question.

"I didn't see any no pet clause in the lease on my apartment. Shouldn't be a problem."

"Cool." Willow smiled, "What are you going to call it."

The boy shrugged, "I'll ask uh. . ." He lifted the kitten up and looked at it's private parts, "Him later."

//Oi whelp, you wanna look at my kitty bit do it in private! 'm not inta public displays.// "Grrr Mew."

"Sorry li'l guy, but you didn't want me to accidentally name you princess or something did you?"

    Spike shivered. //Ok Yer forgiven.//

"I'd better get going." Xander stood and lifted the kitten into his arms. "It's a weekend and I want to finish moving in before I have to be on site Monday."

Willow giggled, "Maybe Tara and I will drop by and see how your new roommate is doing."

He grinned, "We'll get a movie and order out. It'll be fun. Like a slumber party. Except for the slumber part. . . and the girls only part. A multi-sex slumber party minus the squishy noisy sex part. And I can't believe I actually SAID that! Call Buffy, see if her and commando boy want to come too. I'm going to go drown myself to save me from future embarrassments."

//Right, thanks for nothing watcher!// Spike snarled and as the door closed he heard Giles mutter. "I could have sworn that beast was glaring at me."
______________________

Xander juggled Spike and his groceries and opened the door of the apartment then much the the vampire/kitten's dismay, he placed the litter box he'd purchased beside the toilet and filled it with Fresh Steps litter. "This is where you do your thing ok?" He rubbed the kittens nose in it and Spike growled. "No disrespect just pointing it out."

Spike walked around it a little and looked up at Xander, //Bloody 'ell you can't be serious.// But along with immunity to sunlight and the chip, came the living bodies need to relieve itself and feed itself normal food. //Well give us some privacy then!//

Xander grinned and turned around. "Sorry. Tell me when you're through."

//Can you really hear what I'm saying? Oi whelp! It's me! Spike!// "Mrrowl mew! Purrrowl! Hisss!"

"Nope, I'm not leaving, I still need to show you where your food will go. I'm not looking, go ahead."

//Fuck it all. Damn!// He did the deed and covered it quickly then stepped into Xander's line of site. "Mrrow."

Xander looked at the litter and smiled.

//'ey! Why'r y lookin' at it then? It's embarrassin' enough that I 'ave ta do it at all!//

    "Good job."

//'e's praisin' me fer using the litter. 'm never livin' this down.//

Xander lifted the kitten into his arms and took him to the kitchen. Two bowls were placed on the table and filled one with food one with water. "I figured I'd spring for the good stuff since your a growing boy, There might even be real meat in there. Yum!"

    //You're kidding right whelp?//

"You can eat up here with me. I don't have company often so. . . man, pathetic much? Sorry. Go ahead, find your way down so you'll know how to get back here."

Spike looked at Xander like he was stupid.

"Hey it looks different from the floor."

The vampire/kitten gave up and jumped from the table to a chair to the ground then back up and began to eat.

"Cool. Looks like you're all set, I'm going into the living room, right on the other side of the island here and relax a while. Come sit with me when you're done? If you want to of course."

//Whelp's good with cats.// Spike admitted as he watched the boy leave the room. //Gives me enough respect I feel at least a little like myself. Hmm. Talks right to me too. None o' tha' baby talk either. This'll be fine 'till the mojo wears off. Most mojo wont stick ta vamps fer long. I hope.//

In the living room Xander was already half asleep on the couch with the TV playing in the background. //Least 'm not a dog. C'n still see color an' watch the telly.// He leapt up onto Xander's chest and curled up to watch.

    "Mmm. Hey li'l bit."

    //Am NOT little! Oh 'ell.//

"I haven' named you yet." The boy smiled sleepily and stroked the short fluffy fur.

Spike purred in spite of himself. //Better not be somthin' stupid.//

"How about. . . Hm. . . How about Spike."

The kitten blinked. //Well that works doesn't it. Why are you namin' yer ca' after me?//

"Your fur's about the color of Spike's hair." He yawned and his hand slowly stopped moving as sleep snuck up on him. "an' I like . . . Mmm. . . Spike."

//You like me?// The slit eyes strayed then to the whelp's face. //'e's a good lookin' guy when 'es not bein' an idiot. 'e's a real . . . yawn. . . nummy treat.// He stretched and nuzzled into the curve of the human's warm neck to sleep.  The cat gig was annoying the hell out of him. But it had it's moments.

<Part 2>

Xander woke up the next morning to a warm weight on his chest and smiled at the little ball of fur resting there. The sun was up and he knew he should be too, but instead the dark eyed boy lay still and watched the little body on his chest raise up and down with each breath.  It was nice to wake up warm, even if it was just a tiny warmth.

Finally  the call of nature forced him to lift the sleeping kitten carefully and place it on a pillow while he took care of his protesting bladder and got to unpacking. The kitchen was almost  finished with when a groggy platinum fluff ball climbed onto the table and stared at his empty bowl.

"You know, that's a good idea. Mind if I join you?" He laughed at the odd look he was given, "Don't worry, I'll fix my own food, you can have yours." The can opener buzzed and he tossed the top the read the label, "Besides, I don't think chicken and gravy counts as people food for breakfast."

He placed the bowl on the table, full now and then got his own food. When he sat down he noticed, Spike had waited for him to come back to the table before he started eating. "You know, you act almost human sometimes." Xander grinned widely, "You know what I'm saying when I talk, but cats are really smart right? So why do I get the feeling you don't just know what I'm saying, but you understand me too."

    Spike kept eating.

The young man laughed, "Alright I can take a hint. Oh, if Spike, the other spike I mean, shows of for his blood or something, don't be offended if I don't call you by name, it's just. . . it could be awkward. And he doesn't actually know. . ." Those blue eyes were watching his carefully now, "You're a really creepy cat. Cool," he amended quickly, "But creepy."

He'd been at the whelps for going on two days when things took another turn. There he was just minding his own, taking a cat nap, when the slayer's pet walks in all gloomy like and sits on the floor in front of the couch. //Ey, what's th' matter?// "Prrrow?"

Xander picked him up and rubbed his fur gently but his mind wasn't on the kitten. Tears slipped down his face and Spike shook his head comically when one splashed him on the nose.

    //Oi!// "Rrrow"

"He's gone." The human sniffled and shook his head, "I mean it's not like he had any reason to stay around but . . . I didn't tell him. He didn't say good bye. I don't know if he left town or got dusted or is laying in some alley dying again and I can't find him."

//Oh bloody 'ell.// Spike blinked up at the large human holding him. //'E's talkin' about me. The whelp thinks I made a run fer it. Shit.//

"I know, he's probably fine, off on his way to get Drusilla back or something. It shouldn't bother me, he's evil right? I just thought we were friends. Maybe. Kind of. Well we were roomies for a while. That counts as something doesn't it?"

    //Yeah it does pet.// "Mrowl."

"It's funny. I told Anya I couldn't marry her because she wasn't the one. Now the one left without even knowing. God I'm getting pathetic huh. Come on, lets get some comfort food. Want some chocolate, I'll give you a nibble."

Spike licked Xander's face, trying to offer what comfort he could. //When this spell wears off yer gonna hate yerself fer talkin' to 'me' about this.// He let the whelp lift him onto the table and watched him wipe off his face and root through the cupboards. //But 'm glad you told me.//

"You know what? I'm lucky to have you around." He sat down and offered a bit of a hershey bar to the kitten. "It's nice to have someone to talk to."

Spike nodded and took the treat carefully.

"You really do remind me of him." Xander smiled, "You have his attitude."

//Damn right I do! Just cause I'm bit sized doesn't mean I'm not still the big bad!//

He choked back another sob. "Yeah, you're the big bad."

A shock of hope went through the little body before he realized Xander was just reacting to his stance. //Damn.//

"You want to come to the scooby meeting with me? It's research but you wouldn't be left alone when I leave right?"

Spike thought a moment then climbed up onto Xander's shoulder and mewed.

"I guess that's a yes." He smiled, the sadness being beaten back for the time being. "We should get going then, think you can hang on while I walk?"

    //No sweat luv.// "mrow."

____________________________

When Xander walked into the magic shop Willow and Tara giggled and Giles looked up from his books and flinched a bit. "Did you have to bring that beast with you?"

//Ha! Fear me watcher. I am William the. . .// "Rrrrow Mew rrr" //. . .cuddly. Blood 'ell.//

"He's not a beast G-man. He's a kitten." Xander sat down and lifted a book. "So what are we looking for?"

"A demon that can force people in animal shapes."

    //Fradglarn! Why're you hunting it down now?//

"What did it do?" Xander asked and Spike purred. He liked the whelp's uncanny ability to read kitty thoughts.

    "There's a prophecy. . ."

Xander groaned and opened a book. "So where's her Buffyness?"

"She's gone to look for the thing while we look for any clue as to what it is. If we can find out what it looks like it would help immensely. Did you locate Spike last night, he would be most helpful."

Xander clenched his jaw and buried his head in the book he was reading, "Spike's gone."

"Oh. Well in that case We will have to rely on the books."

Spike jumped onto the book Xander held and looked up at him, //S'ok pet. I'm here.//

"Xander! Please take that creature off of my book. It is very old."

The boy sighed and lifted the kitten placing the ball of fluff onto his lap while he flipped through the book in front of him. "So any ideas what this demon is called? It might make this easier."

"That was the reason I asked you to bring Spike." Giles' patience was obviously running thin and Xander knew better than to push him into Ripper mode.

Spike was lazily watching the pages in front of him flip by until he caught a very familiar illustration. //There!// He pounced on the page and bent it over and Xander had to think fast to keep Giles from snatching him up and throwing him out.

"Giles!" Willow was on her feet in an instant, "It's just a kitten!"

"It has attacked me, growled at me and defaced my boo. . ."

    "Wait! G-man!"

    "Xander I have asked you n. . ."

"Look at this!" He pointed to the page the kitten had bent with a triumphant smile.

"A Fradglarn." Willow's eyes widened as she read. "Oh wow! Xander your kitten is a genius!"

Spike purred under the praise and tried his best to grin mockingly at the flustered watcher as he read the information the book gave. "Dear God. This is exactly what we are looking for! Xander how. . ."

He shrugged, "Spike was playing with the pages. He likes pouncing on. . ."

"Spike?!" All of them demanded at once and Xander winced, "Uh. . . did I say Spike? I meant uh. . ."

"Xander." Willow giggled knowingly, "You named you kitten Spike?"

"Just kill me now." He moaned.

"Why?" Buffy walked inside and flopped into a chair.

"He. . ." Willow giggled, "He named his new kitten Spike."

    "Um. . . obvious much?"

    "What?!"

"Oh come on Xander." Buffy shook her head and looked at him carefully, "Do you really think none of us noticed you making goo-goo eyes at our resident Big Sad?"

    "Uh. . . yeah?"

//The whelp made eyes at me?! When was this?//

Tara blushed, "Y-you looked so c-c-cute when you d-did it."

    Xander's face went beet red, "Spike didn't. . ."

"No." Willow assured him, "Spike didn't notice."

"Why are we talking about Spike in past tense?" Buffy , "He's not. . ."

Giles took off his glasses, "No, he isn't dusted, but he has decided to vanish without a trace." He put the glasses back on and glared at all of them, "And just when was I going to find out about Xander's interests?"

Xander buried his face in his hands, "I had hoped when Hell froze over." He muttered and the kitten licked his chin helpfully. "Thanks."

The girls giggled and Giles lifted the book again. "Right then, Fradglarn. Look up all you can find. Especially how to help their victims and defeat them. I'll go over the prophesy."

//Yeah, you do that watcher, and change me back while you're at it!// "Rrwol, hissss mrrrr mrow."

<Part 3>

Finally three am rolled around and Xander closed his book and stood, stretching his cramped muscles with a groan. "Well all, we're off. Gotta get up early to keep the two of us in chocolate and Fancy Feast."

Willow and Buffy snickered and Tara smiled.

Giles just looked relieved. The 'Beast' (as the kitten had been dubbed by the watcher) had been following Giles around all evening. It was uncanny how the thing knew just what to get into to annoy him the most. And with the protection of Xander and Buffy both, there was nothing Giles could do but take it. . . and blush bright red when it unearthed the bag of cannabis from the side table near his bed and dragged it out to 'share'. Although he swore it was left over from his time spent enchanted into his youth, no one believed him, and the Beast tried to eat some! It was the good stuff too!

"Ah, right." He placed his glasses back on and nodded, "Goodnight Xander."

"G'night." He smiled, and then added with a snicker, "Hey Giles, remember, just say no." Xander closed the door right before the  cushion hit and laughed. He had been walking for a few minuets when the boy reached up to place a hand over the kitten on his shoulder. "You know, if I made you a pair of wings and a set of horns, you could be my conscience." He teased.

Spike snorted, but it came out sounding more like a sneeze.

    "Bless you."

    "Mrow." //bloody kitten vocals.//

"You were a good kitten today Spike. You helped out a lot." He stroked the soft fur. But man! I don't know what you have against Giles."

//A bathtub an' chains an' missed passions eps.//  "Grrr." Spike winced at the pathetic attempt to growl.

Xander slipped the kitten from his shoulder to cradle it in front of him. "Don't worry about it okay?"

    //The whelp doesn't know what I'm sayin' but 'e still understands me.//

A very grown up growl startled them both from their musings

"Spike. . . please tell me that was you."

"Mew." //Not bloody likely in this body.//

"I didn't think so." The slayerette turned toward the shadows on the side of the street and jumped, "Oh shit!" It was the Fradglarn! Xander reached for his stake but the demon batted it out of his hand easily, tearing some of Xander's skin of in the process. "Ouch!"

//Shit! Yer no match for it on yer own! Run!// "Merrowl! Grrr! ckhsss!"

Xander didn't need to speak the language in order to get the message. He grasped the little platinum  kitten to his chest and ran.  "What did Giles' books say? What did they say? Shit! I knew I should have been paying attention! Uh. . . Iron! They hate iron! Shitshitshitshit where do I fine Iron in Sunnydale?!" He skid around a corner and stumbled to the ground, rolling to his back as he hit to protect the little life in his hands. That fall was all it took for the demon to catch up.

Spike could see the thing advancing on them, he smelled blood from Xander's hands and from his back where he'd hit the gravel and slid a few feet before hitting a fence and stopping. The blood from those strong, work callused hands was staining his fur red. Spike made a decision.

He wriggled out of Xander's strong protective grasp and launched himself at the approaching Fradglarn, sinking sharp little claws and teeth into it face just above it's mouth. The thing roared and tore at the kitten trying to force it off but Spike just dug in deeper. //Run luv! Get out of here!//

Xander panted on the ground and stared in horror at the kitten's battle before getting a good grip and ripping one of the ornate end poles from the fence behind him.

//Damn it! Now is not the time to stop understanding! Run!//

"Spike!" The kid ran all right. He ran right at the injured and furious demon!

//Fucking white hat!// Spike gave a loud screech when the claws finally ripped him away from the thick hide of the monster. He could feel his little body flying through the air but instead of striking concrete he slammed into blood soaked cotton, caught tightly against a human chest. //Xan.//

"Hang on Spike! I'll get you help." He promised, covering the kitten with one hand and brandishing the pole with his other.

The fradglarn charged again and Xander braced himself for an impact that never came. He opened his eyes and looked around but the thing was gone! "Huh?" He looked at the tip of the pole and notice a streak of blue on it. Fradglarn blood! The dark haired boy fell back against the fence and began to laugh hysterically. It was an old, iron, church fence. Iron. "Oh God I will never doubt you're up there even again." He laughed until tears were streaming down his face and stood up once again. "Shock can wait. I need to get you to vet. I'll bang on every vet's door in Sunnydale if I have to. Just hang on Spike."

//Tryin' to pet.// He mewed plaintively and it was enough to reassure the boy. that mew was all he could force out before he lost consciousness.

Xander ran to the nearest vet's house he could think of and started banging on the door. "Hey! Doctor Briant! Hey! Please! We need Help! Please!"

A middle aged man with bed head and a five O'clock shadow opened the door. "What the hell. Kid so you know what time it. . . Holy Shit!" His eyes shot open when he noticed the blood coating the boy in front of him. "What the Hell happened?"

"A. . . it was a wild dog." He sobbed, "Please doc, my kitten. . ."

"A dog. Xander? Xander Harris is that you?"

Xander fell to his knees, unable to fight off the shock anymore. "Please doc. It was a dog. My kitten."

"Come in! Come in! Let me get my clothes on and I'll drive us to the clinic." He bundled Xander up in a blanket and led him to the car. "I haven't seen you since Baby died. Didn't think you would ever get another kitten after her."

Xander didn't answer and the vet looked over with concern. "Xander?" He swore when he realized the blood wasn't just coming from the cat. "Xander you need to get to a hospital. . ."

    "My kitten."

"Okay, okay." He pulled out his cellular and hit the speed dial. "Nick? This is Daniel Briant. Yeah I know what time it is, there's an emergency here. I need you to meet me at the clinic. Yeah I know you're a people doctor Nick. It's this kid, he won't go to a hospital until his kitten's okay and he really needs to be looked at. Yeah, we're at the clinic now. Hurry okay?" He opened the door and pulled Xander out, leading him inside. "I need to take the kitten now okay?"

    Xander wouldn't move.

"Xander! Xander look at me. I need to take the kitten if we're going to make him better okay?"

    "Please."

"Come on. Xander open your hands, come on." Doctor Briant silently swore when he saw the mangled little creature. //Life just can't be kind to you can it Xanny.// "There, that's good. I'm going to take him to the back now and see what I can do okay? What's his name?"

    "Spike."

"A doctor is coming in a few minuets okay? Let him fix you up so you can hold Spike when I bring him out okay?"

"Okay." Xander whispered, his eyes were clouded and unseeing,  trapped in shock and pain.

"Okay." The doctor took Spike into the operating area and took out his phone again. "Hello? Willow? This is doctor Briant. Do you still hang out with Xander Harris. Yeah, he's here at the office. I know. He came by with a kitten. Yes Spike. They're both in pretty bad shape. . . okay. The door's unlocked, he's in the waiting room. I don't know, Spike's pretty bad. All right. Thank you." He hung up and began to wash his hands. "Let's see what I can do."

The Scoobies slammed into the vet's office and spotted Xander right away. He was sitting, starring off into space while a man in a white shirt stitched, butterflied, and bandaged his hands. "Xander!"

The doctor finished with Xander's injuries and stood. "Hello. I'm Nick Williams."

"Rupert Giles." Giles shook the offered hand, "Is he all right?"

"He's all patched up, it was a wild dog from what I heard. The kitten he had with him is still in surgery, he wouldn't leave without it so Doc Briant called me over to see to Xander here."

"Thank you so much for going out of your way like that."

Nick watched the three girls cuddle and fuss over the boy and smiled, "Not a problem. When I saw who it was I realized why Briant didn't want to force him to go to emergency. This kid must have the worst luck in the world."

Giles blinked, "What do you mean?"

"Well, two kittens, eight years apart, two wild dogs, at least this time the kitten survived to get this far. Last time Briant had to pry the cat from the kid's hands. It broke his heart. This little eleven or twelve year old kid shows up covered in bites and blood holding a half eating kitten and begging the doc to save it." Nick shook his head. "Hope to God that this one's okay."

The watched turned to stare at Xander in horror. The boy had finally fallen asleep leaning against Willow, tears running down his cheeks. "That was the cat he used to have?"

Willow nodded. "Baby was Xander's first real pet. Not counting the sea monkeys. When she died, it took a long time for him to get over it." She looked at the doctor, "Will Spike be okay?"

    "I don't know."

Buffy scowled and looked helpless. She hated being helpless!

Giles frowned and cleaned his glasses, "Yes well, Xander cares a great deal for the little beast." He led the doctor to the door and gave him an address to send the bill to. "Thank you for your help." He said ,solemnly "We are all ggrateful"

"Giles," Willow whispered after the door was closed behind doctor Williams,  "Xander said Spike attacked the Fradglarn to protect him."

    "He attacked it?" Giles froze.

"Yeah. He'll feel so guilty if the kitten dies! We should have never asked him to take it in!"

"Willow. Xander said his kitten attacked the Fradglarn?!"

    "Giles? What's wrong?"

"Our research said Fradglarn smelled calming to animals. They would never feel threatened by one. Especially not enough to attack."

"Well Spike obviously felt threatened." Buffy snorted.

The watched mused over this, "What if the kitten has had past experiences with a Fradglarn?"

    "But how?"

    "As a victim."

Buffy's eyes got wide. "But we tracked down all the missing people and the animals they turned into. We did that before we even knew what the thing was! I mean the animals always stayed close to home!"

"And none of us are missing someone." Willow added.

    Tara gasped. "E. . . except s. . . s. . . Spike."

Giles dropped the glasses he was cleaning, "God Lord."

<Part 4>

It was three hours later that doctor Briant emerged from the small examining/operating room. Three tense and keenly felt hours for the three of them who hadn't passed out from exhaustion. They were painfully aware that if Tara's suspicion proved correct, then they were waiting on the fate of a man they had all come to view as family (no matter how distant). Briant smiled sadly at Xander's slumped form, unaware of the additional drama playing out in his small office. "You should wake him up." He told them in a quiet voice.

"What happened?" Willow's hand tightened over Tara's, "Is Spike. . ."

    "He's okay for now."

They all relaxed and Willow shook her friend gently. "Xan. Xander, wake up." He moved a bit and settled back into sleep. "Xander. Spike's . . ."

The rumpled boy was instantly awake and on his feet, "What? Where is he?! Is he okay?!"

The vet smiled, offering reassurance. "He's fine. There's still a chance of infection though. There was a lot of bleeding, some broken bones in one leg, and multiple cuts and abrasions. He went into shock once because of the blood loss, that's one of the reasons it took so long, but for now he's in the clear and resting peacefully. That's one strong little kitten."

"Yeah." Xander's relief was as heavy as his pride in the little one.

"Do you want to see him? He'll have to stay here overnight so that I can observe him and stop and infection from spreading. Then, in the morning I'll run some blood tests and give him some more antibiotic injection once he's processed the last ones. When we get the results of the tests we can go from there." A mantra was going through the vet's mind under his reassuring words. 'please don't let it be rabies. Please don't let him have his kitten back just to have to kill it.' If he had known the 'dog' was actually a demon, he would not have been comforted in the least regardless of the fact that demons rarely carry rabies or tetanus.

    "Can I stay with him?"

Doctor Briant nodded, "I thought you would want to. I can set of a cot for you in one of the back rooms okay?"

    "With Spike?"

    "Yes. With Spike."

    "Okay."

"Come on, let's take you to your kitten."

When Xander entered the small room, he had to fight back tears of relief and sorrow both at the same time. Spike was lying in the middle of the cold metal table covered in stitches. His soft and silky fur was matted and shaved in various places and still faintly red from Xander's own blood. On the kitten's front right leg there was a hard cast It must have been from when the Fradglarn tore Spike from it's muzzle. It looked like Spike had been through Hell. But he was breathing. "Spike." Xander whispered, suddenly feeling twelve years old again.

"Come on." The vet offered. "We'll get you settle in for what's left of the night. You need to rest so you can take care of Spike when he goes home with you. I'll tell your friends that you'll be staying and ask them to come back for you tomorrow night."

He nodded and allowed himself to be led away. He was suddenly beyond exhaustion, and now that he knew Spike would be alright and now that his friends were there, he could let go and shut down.

Spike was given a clean bill of health the following night just as Doc Briant had promised. Even back in his own apartment though, it took Xander a few days to settle down and stop jumping at shadows. It took a few days for him to settle enough to sleep without nightmares. As it was, one of the gang was always present and Spike slept always near, somewhere tucked against Xander's body. It was the only way either of them could sleep anymore.

Buffy peeked into the apartment after her classes were over for the day, "How is he?"

Willow looked up from the couch and motioned the slayer over quietly, "He's been sleeping all day. Spike's curled up in this tiny little ball on his chest. It's so cute!" She gushed. "I got pictures."

After observing the 'cute'ness for herself, Buffy's face darkened a bit. "So. . . what happened really wore him out."

"It brought back a lot of bad memories." She agreed, "And I think that the kitten has become a kind of final link to Spike in Xander's mind. At least subconsciously."

"So. . . what if it really is Spike?"

"Giles is trying to find a counter spell. . ."

"We already have one don't we? Wait a sec! We did that massive spell to bring back all of the victims at once, why didn't it work on that kitten if it's really Spike?"

"Vampires absorb magic differently. A spell for humans won't always work on them."

"Okay, so Giles finds a vamp type spell and tries it and Spike might be Spike. How will Xander react to that? How will Spike? After all the stuff they've been through during this do you think. . . Xander really loves him you know."

"I know." Willow breathed. "Xander has a habit of talking out his angst to his pets. If the kitten is Spike. . . I think Xander will have a lot of explaining to do."

"I hate to admit it, but maybe this is just what they both needed. I mean, Spike needs to have someone to take care of and to love him and Xander. . . honestly, I think Xander just needs Spike."

Willow nodded. "Me too Buffy. But will Spike see that?"

    "I hope so."

Spike stayed absolutely still until the girls finally left the apartment. He had a lot to think about. Their words echoed through his mind and mixed with Xander's secrets and tears. //They finally caught on.// He breathed out in a kittenish version of a sigh. //Won't be long now in this body.// He looked up at Xander's sleeping face at let out a small mew. //And then what?//

//What'll 'appen pet? Will you be angry at me? Embarrassed? Relieved that 'm not dust?// He licked the strong chin slightly, careful not to move his broken little body too much. //When did I start ta care anyway? Was jus' supposed ta be a place ta stay till I was me again an now. . . I never thought I'd regret the chance ta be me ol' self again.//

The once-vampire kneaded Xander's sleep shirt and mewled plaintively. //Could almost live'appily jus' like this. Jus' bein' 'ere fer 'im. Pet an' confidant. . . but i want more. I want ta be more to him. I want ta be able ta 'old 'im when 'e's cryin'. Licking is good and fine but it's more effective with arms ta 'old 'im to ya. And it's more fun with legs ta wrap round 'is waist.//

"Mmm. Spike?" The soft, whiskey brown eyes opened a bit to blink at him. "You okay? You need food or the litter or something?"

//Need me body back. Need you. Need a bloody miracle I do.// "Mew." He cuddled his face into Xander's skin and closed his eyes. //Go to sleep luv. I'm watching over you.// "Purrrrolw."

Xander laughed, "Yeah. You're my watch cat aren't you."

Spike had learned not to think to much of each moment that Xander seemed to read his kitty type mind.

    "G'night Spike."

    "Purr." //Night luv.//

When Xander woke again he felt completely relaxed and rested. He reached up to carefully stroke Spike's soft fur and hummed in contentment. The Fradglarn couldn't hurt them while they were inside the warded apartment. And just as an extra precausion, Spike now sported a thick iron collar. Well, okay, not so thick and iron plated, but it would still be effective. He yawned out his last bit of sleepiness and lifted Spike into his arms. "What say we rake in some new scenery?" He grinned and moved the kitten amd himself into the living room and placed the kitten on a soft pillow before entering the kitchen area. To his surprise, he came face to face with Giles.

    "G-man! What're you doing here?!"

The watcher's expression flitted between annoyance, surprise, and happiness. Finally, happiness won and he gathered his young ward into his arms. "Xander! It's good to see you up and about! Are you quite alright?"

He nodded and hugged the watcher back. "Sorry I scared all of you."

"You had better be!" He gave a mock frown, "I had to chase those girls out of this home with threats of bodily harm in order to make them sleep."

    "Love you too Giles."

The Englishman was visibly flustered. "Ah. . . well. . . yes, of course."

"How long have I been out of it?"

"Two days and three nights." He quickly added, "We called your employer and he told us to make sure you rest and recouperate and he will see you back on site when you are well again."

He breathed a sigh of releif. "Great. I don't know what I would do without you man."

"Grow fat on twinkies and live to a ripe old age?"

"You take good care of us."

"yes. . . well. . ." oh look, flustered watcher again. "you are my family. It's in the contract for father figure."

He smiled and looked around the kitchen. "Were you doing a spell in here or something?" He aksed as he took in the various jars and herbs spred over the counter tops.

"Ah yes, the girls and I discovered a possible victim of the Fradglarn."

"You missed one?" Xander frowned, "I thought is was one of those 'touches all' spells."

"It was. We are not even sure if it is really a victim or if it is just a real animal, but I tried a more powerful reversal spell anyway."

    "Did it work?"

"Hm?" He looked up from packing the jars away and nodded, "Oh, of course I tried, I am not yet sure if it took effect however in a moment we shall see."

    "You brought the guy here?!"

Giles looked uncomfortable again. As if he was trying to break something to Xander but didn't know how. That made Xander more nervous than Giles was. "He was already here."

"Wha. . . where?! I had a human/animal living in here and didn't know it? Was the guy a mouse or something?" Even as he said it, things began to click in Xander's mind but he steadfastly ignored the truth that was itching at the back of his mind.

"Buffy has found the Fradglarn's lair, once this reversal is complete we can go. . . ah. . . slay it."

"Why wait? Is rat boy a wizard or something?" A crash from the living room caused Xander's head to snap toward the couch where he'd left Spike. Spike wasn't there! "Spike! Giles! I thought you said nothing could get it he. . ."

    "Bloody fuckin' 'ell!"

The boy froze, eyes wide and jaw slack. He walked to the back of the couch and look over it and onto the floor between the sofa and the small coffee table, where a very battered and naked Spike was snapping an iron collar off of nis neck.

"What the 'ell ya tryin' ta do watcher? Take off me 'ead?! Took ya long enough anyway. Came ta ya fer 'elp first thin' didn't I?"

"spike." Xanders voice was and octive too high.

Familiar blue eyes glanced up at his and the vamp blinked and gave an uncomfortable grin. "Uh. . . collar was a bit tight luv."

    "spike." He squeaked.

"You okay pet? Ya look a bit white there. . ."

    ". . ." Xander nodded calmly.

"Why don't you sit down pet?"

The boy gave a hysterical little giggle at the word pet and promptly fainted.

    "Shit."

<Part 5>

Spike sat on the edge of the bed watching Xander sleep. The boy'd been through a lot lately. He'd woken up once, his hand was moving over his chest like he was looking for something that should be there. It took a moment for Spike to realize what should've been there was him. Well, kitten him anyway. He'd placed his head on the softly rising and falling chest and let Xander stroke his hair until he was fully asleep again. It had taken a huge effort for Spike to pull away from Xander's warm fingers but he'd done it. Then he resumed his watch over the sleeping scooby.

Xander began to stir again and Spike stood quickly and moved to a chair nearby, closing his eyes as if he hadn't been watching the boy all day. He pushed down the little ache inside him when he realized that he wasn't welcome to curl up into that warmth anymore. //Never thought I'd miss bein' a cat.//

"Spike." His name was breathed out in a sleepy sigh and Xander rolled closer to where his cool weight rested, so different from the warmth of the kitten he'd been.

"'m here. In one form or another. Always here."

"Spike." Giles stood in the doorway, watching the vampire carefully.

    "Watcher?"

"I should have known that only you could annoy me as much as that blasted kitten was."

"Well, so much fer all that watcher knowledge." He glarred, "Thought you'd wise up sooner."

"The idea of you being a cute little 'anything' threw of my usual powers of deduction."

    "S'at a fact?"

"Indeed. Now about Xander. . ."

"No need ta waste yer breath Rupes." Spike stood and cracked his neck, stiff from leaning over the boy for hours. "'M outta here when the boy comes to. Evil undead an' all."

"I think you have misjudged the situation."

"Might 'ave yeah, but I don't think so."

Giles eyes burned and he backed the startled vamp into the wall, "I never took William the Bloody for a coward. Of course Xander will be upset, he's had a shock. That doesn't mean you get to give up and blame him for your hundred and twenty year old insecurities. If you want him then fight for him, he has just as many fears as you."

"Why're ya rootin' me on ta court yer boy. Would think a watcher'd be pushing me away fast 'n far."

The human shook his head and smiled indulgently at Spike, "Because I saw how upset he was when he thought you were gone. I've watched him bury a part of himself since high school, and amazingly, I think you will be just what he needs."

"I just get yer approval ta court?"

"I beleive that is what I said."

"Bit hard ta translate watcher speak."

He shook his head, "I need to get some ingredients to insure that none of you are affected by the Fradglarn's magic when we fight it.can you stay with Xander and then bring him to the magic shop when he wakes?"

"'Ey! Jus' cause I'm workin' at bein' yer son-in-law don't mean I gotta listen to ya!"

"Actually that is exactly what it means." He smirked and left before Spike could think of how to respond to that.

    "Hn. Cheeky git i'nt 'e?"

Xander yawned adn stretched his arms in languid peace. He let his eyes slowly drift open to the soft light of //. . . wait, light?// His brow furroughed in confusion //why did I leave the light on? Spike won't settle down and sleep if. . . Spike?//

He sat up so fast that he made himself dizzy, "Oooh, not good." After the room settled again the sable haired boy stood and began searching for the platinum kitten who should have been sleeping on his chest o rpillow like always. "Spike? Come on, kitty kitty, wher are you? Spike?"

    "Though yeh'd sleep fer ever."

Everything came back to him at the sight of the blond vampire. The Fradglarn, the fight, the iron fence, the vet, and Giles doing a spell to bring back the last o fthe demon's victims. Then, Spike. His kitten was. . .

    "Oi! Doin't go faintin' again!"

    "Spike?"

"S'prise." He had the decency to look sheepish at least.

    "My Spike is THE Spike?"

"One of a kind I am."

    "Where is Giles?"

"Want 'im ta turn me back?" Spike look half way between laughing and growling now and Xander's eyes started to look a bit shiney.

    "Giles?" He called.

"Oh! Fine! Said 'e had ta go ta the shop. I'm ta take you there after dark."

The human's thoughts were racing, Spike could almost see the gears turning.

    "My kitten. . ."

Spike's heart lurched. The kid looked so young, and so lost. //'At's right, 'eard th' witches talkin' while we were healin' up. 'bout Xan's cat getting offed in front o' 'im when 'e was a boy. 'E knows I was the kitten, be 'e's still lost 'is pet again.// "Can pet me if you want." Spike spoke quickly, with a lecherous grin to cover his less than big bad thoughts, "I'll even purr fer ya."

'Huh?" He blushed bright red. "Ah. . . about what I said to you, . . . when you were . . ."

Spike opened his mouth to answer but was cut off by the telephone ringing. The vampire snatched it off the cradle and pulled his arm back but Xander snatched it from him before it cound be thrown.

"Hello?. . . oh. . . . yeah. . . we can, but. . . no. . . why don't you come. . . sure. See you then. Bye." He hung up and spoke without looking at Spike, "They're doing the spells over here, since you can't go out yet and you need to get one done on you."

    "Harris. . ."

"Let's clean up a little before they get here okay?"

    "Harris. . ."

"Does dust throw off magic cause maybe we should. . ."

    "Xander!"

    "WHAT?!"

The stood facing eachother, Spike not moving an inch and Xander looking like he was hyperventilating. "Jus' ferget it alright?"

    "Forget. . ."

"Far as I'm thinkin' it never 'appened."

"Oh." Xander's voice was small but he nodded, "Yeah, sure, uh. . . well. . .  I gotta clean up so. . ."

"Sure, right." Spike flopped onto the couch and closed his eyes, "Middle o' my night anyroad."

Xander left the room quickly and Spike opened troubled eyes to the ceiling. //S'way I don't do humans. Bloody complicated they are. Vamp's jus' like a cat anyway, jus' more fun s'all.// What he didn't let himself think of was the fact that since he was no longer Xanders 'kitten', he no longer had a place in Xander's home. Thoughts like that did not promote sleep, and right then, there was a Fradglarn to worry about.
