<Part 1>

Duo maxwell had grown up with war. He had been trained as a soldier since he was small. Book upon book of stratagy had been given to him by his foster fathers and mission upon mission was run by him, but nothing could have prepared him but true battle. The battles he now fought everyday.

War was fire and smoke and blood and death. Not the pretty death books and poems and songs talk about but true ugly death. Clotted, rotten smelling blood not floowing in a perfect river or puddle but splattered across his face. Bodies not rightiously layed out in death but twisted in a grotesque asymmetry and covered in mud and blood and flies who would lay their eggs in the wounds so magotts could feed on the corpse's flesh. Bodies that would stiffen in a few hours and would lay there, in the open, unburried and unhonored because they were only soldiers.

    Duo was only a soldier.

Battle raged all around them. Duo's sythe cut hottly through the nearest suits as he rage through them. "Heero!!!"

Wing Zero was down and Heero wouldn't respond. The Deathsythe Hell pilot had never been more scared. Heero was all he had! All that kept him fighting! He wouldn't let the Japanese boy become just another stiffened body. Not while *he* lived!

He fought like a mad man to reach his fallen partner. //I can't loose him like this, I haven't told him. . . he can't die on me now!"

A quick slash and the final mobil dolls were destroyed but Duo didn't even notice. He knelt his Gundam down and lifted Wing carefully, straining all of his systems to breaking and then some. The controls begain sparking and he rewired them by hand, letting the shocks run through him without thought until they were back in the safe house.

Duo pryed open Heero's suit and pulled the unconsious boy free from his harness. He slipped the heavy helmet and flight suit off and checked his pulse and breathing. Normal. "SHIT Heero! You scared the crap outta me!!!"

Heero coughed and Duo realized he had a death grip on the pilot. "Duo."

    "Eh. . . sorry Heero."

"You took out my self destruct unit again."

"Well I can't let you keep trying to kill yourself."

"That's what it's there for Duo."

    "Mine never works."

"That's because every time you do this I replace mine with yours." Heero smirked.

"You. . ." Duo couldn't think of a thing to say. Heero was smirking. It wasn't a smile but for Heero it was a lot. "God I love your smile."

    "What?!"

Duo jumped up and dropped Heero's head to slam into the ground, "Oh Heero! I'm sorry I mean. . . shit I said it out loud didn't I? Please tell me that slam on your head just wiped out you memory of say, the last five minuets 'cause I like life, I like to breath, I'd really like to keep breathing and. . ."

    "Duo."

    "Hm?"

Heero stood stiffly and looked at his partner carefully, "Thank you."

The American's jaw fell open. "Did you just. . . say thank you? Shit! I'm hallucinating. I knew it. I've gone zero system."

    "You haven't gone zero system."

"I must have cause my Heero would never. . . oh shit, I didn't mean my Heero I meant. . . shit."

    "Duo."

    "You said that all ready."

    "I like saying it."

"Well 'it' is a cool word."

    "I like saying Duo."

    "Heero?"

Heero looked down and took in a slow breath, "You're hurt."

    Duo lifted his burnt hands, "It. . . it's ok. I just. . ."

"You recalibrated your systems mid flight. To support Wing's weight."

    "I couldn't leave you there."

    "Why?"

    "You'd have died!"

"I'm a soldier, we have short lives."

    "But I . . . I would have died too."

"I don't trust my interpretation in this kind of situation. I haven't been in this place before. Tell me Duo. Why?"

Duo blushed and lowered his eyes but Heero caught his chin and lifted them back to his own, finding them full of tears, "But you'll hate me."

    "I doubt that."

    "I. . . Heero Ilo'ou"

    "What?"

"I. . . I'm in love with you! Ok?! I'm stupid! I know! How could the perfect soldier even care about me but I do and I can't just stop 'cause it's part of me and it hurts but it feels so right and it's just. . ."

    Heero closed his eyes tight.

"Oh God! Oh shit! Heero, I'm so sorry, I didn't mean, I take it back ok? Let's just pretend I was never dumb enough to . . ."

    "No."

"Heero." Duo's tears were flowing freely and he sobbed in desperation, "Please Heero, I just. . . just let me stay. I want to fight beside you, I won't hit on you or anything I just don't want to leave you. I need you, please, I won't say anything. I'll. . . I'll sleep in Wufei's room ok? We can work on trusting again. . ."

"I meant no. Don't take it back."

He froze and sank to his knees. Heero sat in front of him and waited. "I. . . why?"

    "I'm a soldier, not a poet."

"I need to hear it too, Heero."

    "I. . . I don't. . . not love you."

Duo smiled and Heero gave him a slight upturn of the lips. "I don't not love you too Heero." The American hugged his partner tight and sobbed happily, "Gods Heero I never. . . I couldn't even hope! I mean. . . Gods I love you!"

Heero hugged Duo back tentatively, unsure of how to show affection that he had never been shown.

    "Heero?"

    "Hm?"

    "Can I . . . can I kiss you?"

Heero leaned his head back to look into Duo's eyes and found himself drawn forward slowly. His eye lids slipping shut. He breathed out, "Hai."

Then warm lips met and Heero gasped as Duo's tongue traced his lips and slipped inside his hot mouth and tasted him as surely as he was tasting Duo. And he tasted sooo good! They clung to one another like they were drowning and only that contact could keep them alive. Duo moaned into their kiss and Heero answered it, leaning closer. When they finally pulled apart Heero touched his lips in wonder. "I. . ."

"Wow!" Duo gasped and mirrored Heero's touch.

    "I. . ."

"You don't have to say anything Heero. We'll work up to that. Right now I'm just glad you're here and you're ok." Duo grinned, "And that you don't not love me."

Heero nodded and helped Duo up. "You're a mess."

"Look at you, perfect soldier." He snickered, "You take a mud bath?"

    "Hn. I'm going to shower."

    Duo winked, "Want some company?"

    "I. . . ah. . ."

The American shook his head, "I was kidding. We can take all the time you need."

    "Aa."

Duo watched Heero enter the house and smirked, //He even forgot to camo-net his gundam!// He quickly covered both of them and jumped and ran around the yard happily turning cartwheels and working off some of his energy so he wouldn't jump his partner the moment he saw him again! //Heero doesn't not love me!// Nothing could have taken the smile from The pilot's face!

Heero looked back out at Duo one last time and grunted affectionatly. "Hn. . . 'my' baka."
